Location:
Kikili is a small beachside villa located in the
south coastal fishing village of Thalpe, just 10 minutes drive
from the historic city of Galle. This romantic one-bedroom
villa is an ideal spot from which to explore Sri Lanka’s
southern cultural heritage, wildlife and beautiful beaches.
The journey from the International Airport will take about
four-and-a-half hours - or take the Air Taxi and fly to Koggala,
which is a 15-minute drive to the villa.
Description:
Set on a quiet stretch of beach, with the turquoise
waters of the Indian Ocean at your feet, this one-bedroomed
villa is full of life and character. Owned by Henri Tatham,
the charismatic manager of The Sun House in Galle, Kikili
has been cleverly designed with a simple layout and vibrant
and bright interiors. The villa is ideal for young couples
seeking a romantic beach escape. There is no swimming pool
in the garden but the sea is just a few footsteps away. The
location is ideal for those wanting to dip in and out of Galle’s
bohemian social scene.
Accommodation:
Kikili consists of one a/c bedroom with ensuite bathroom separated
from the lounge area by a curtain divider. The lounge has
a comfortable day bed that can be used for a child.
Facilities:
The lounge opens out to a verandah and a garden with
beautiful views of the sea and stilt fisherman at a distance.
A thatched cabana in the garden serves as a dining area serviced
by the small kitchenette indoors. The villa is staffed with
a full time cook/house boy who is very helpful and will take
you to the local market to purchase fresh seafood, fruit and
vegetables.
Excursions:
Although Kikili has direct access to the beach, for safe swimming
a short walk along the sandy beach takes you to a reef protected
lagoon. Surfing is ideal at Unawatuna, laden with small and
rustic beach bar shacks; just a few minutes walk away. The
historical town of Galle with its Dutch Fort, a UNESCO-protected
World Heritage site and a melting pot of cultural influences,
is just a 15-minute drive. With its well-preserved ramparts
overlooking the cricket stadium, the grand old lighthouse
staring into the Indian Ocean, the narrow streets, interesting
restaurants and boutique hotels full of character, Galle Fort
deserves hours of exploration. A boat ride on Koggala Lake
with its many islands is another wonderful experience. Eagle
Island with about 100 nesting Eagles, and other small islands
with nesting parrots and a variety of bird species makes Koggala
Lake a bird watcher's delight.
