Location: Last House is situated on the beautiful
deep south coastline near Tangalle. The area offers some of
the best unspoilt beaches in the island. Driving directly
from Colombo Airport is a long drive – 6 hours minimum
if the traffic is kind – so you are best considering
a stopover. Alternatively, jump aboard SriLankan's new Air
Taxi service which now flies daily to Dickwella, about 15
mins from the villa.
Description: The Last House, so-called because
it was Geoffrey Bawa’s architectural swansong, is positioned
on an idyllic strip of land – lagoon on one side, beach
on the other – on the outskirts of Tangalle. The beach
is fabulously long – perhaps one of the best for villa
sites in the island – and offers safe swimming for much
of the year. As one would expect from Sri Lanka’s most
respected architect, a man that mixed Sri Lanka’s rich
cultural past with a clean modernity, the villa is also very
special. Essentially, the layout is shaped like a horse-shoe,
with kitchen, living rooms and courtyard bedrooms surrounding
the swimming pool on three sides. The advantage of this design
is that while the various verandas, dining and sitting rooms
are well-suited to social occasions, the property also offers
privacy to friends or generations of a family. At the back
of the main building there is a lovingly tended garden with
an expansive stretch of lawn leading down to the beach. There
are four double bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, as well
as a twin and a single that share a bathroom.
Facilities: Bedrooms are well-proportioned,
airy and light, with en suite bathrooms that are fitted with
either a traditional bath tubs or showers. The pool is 10
metres in length. There is an in-house chef.
Staffing: The villa is now managed by The
Kandy House who have ensured that it’s maintained to
the highest possible standards. There is a full complement
of staff, including an excellent chef. Unlike most villas,
the Last House is sold on an “all-inclusive” basis
with a fee of approximately £30 being charged per person
each day for three meals and all your beverages, including
house wine.
