Location:
Little Taprobane is a self-catering beach house set
on the beautiful coast of Waikkal just 7 km north of Negombo
town. This new property is located half-an-hour away from
the International Airport making it an ideal first or last
stop on your holiday in Sri Lanka. It is also enroute to the
hill country and the ancient sites of the Cultural Triangle.
The journey from Colombo is 1.5 hours.
Description:
This small two-storey beach house is a joint venture
that has just been opened to guests. The compound is shared
by Taprobane, a second house belonging to the British partner
who is away most of the year keeping the house closed up.
Hence, Little Taprobane enjoys much privacy and seclusion.
The two houses are separated by the newly commissioned swimming
pool which is shared by both houses. Just a few steps away,
right on the beach, is Sugie's restaurant, which is open all
day and offers a mix of Sri Lankan rice and curry, Eastern
and Western dishes prepared with fresh seafood straight from
the catamarans as they bring in their catch of the day. Sugie
is the local partner and is always at hand to assist guests
with their requirements.
Accommodation:
The ground floor of Little Taprobane follows an open plan
consisting of a sleeping area, lounge, kitchenette and verandah.
The attached bathroom has a W/C, sink and shower with hot
and cold water. The ground floor is comfortably furnished
with a double bed that can sleep two adults. Upon request,
the lounge area can be separated with a curtained room divider
and equipped with two additional single beds at an extra cost.
The bathroom has two entrances which can be used separately
by the two sleeping areas. The house is well equipped with
overhead fans, television, CD player and DVD, refrigerator,
two burner gas cooker, saucepans, crockery, cutlery, towels
and bed linen. The upstairs consists of an open-sided lounge
with beautiful views of the Indian Ocean. Furnished with relaxing
loungers, this is an ideal area for dining or just lazing
around.
Facilities:
Little Taprobane is rented on a "house only"
basis which includes daily cleaning and bed making. Meals
can be provided by Sugie at an additional charge at his restaurant
or at the house on the verandah or terrace upstairs. For those
wishing to do their own cooking, groceries, fresh seafood
and vegetables can be purchased just a short distance away.
Reliable trishaws or taxis are available for getting around.
Excursions: Join the fisherman on a catamaran
as they set sail early morning, or take boat trip down the
Dutch canals through the quaint town of Negombo with its rich
colonial heritage. Visit churches built by the Portuguese
and the ruins of the Dutch Fort. Experience the culture and
traditions of the coastal fishing villages and the bustle
of the early morning fish auction where you can purchase fresh
seafood including prawns, crab and lobster that Sugie and
his wife will be more than happy to prepare especially for
you. For those keen on bird watching, take a ride into the
Muthurajawela marshes and the Negombo Lagoon, home to numerous
species of birds and amphibians.
