Location:
The Bungalow at Mirissa Hills is the simpler sister
property of Mount Cinnamon villa and is situated at the edge
of the same cinnamon estate in Mirissa on the southern tip
of Sri Lanka. Mount Cinnamon Villa lies five minutes away,
further up the hill. Mirissa Bay, one of the finest beaches
in the island, is nearby. The journey from the Colombo’s
International Airport will take approximately five hours -
or take the Air Taxi and fly to Koggala, which is a 15-minute
drive from the bungalow.
Description:
Mirissa Hills is a cosy, ochre-coloured bungalow
which offers excellent
value for this sought-after area of Sri Lanka. The property
has been carefully restored by its Hong Kong owners, who have
maintained the feel of the `Walauwa’, or traditional
ancestral home. The high roofs, windows with ornately carved
fretwork, a courtyard, clay-tiled roof and a well-kept lawn
with plenty of tropical foliage all combine to make this a
natural, tranquil and charming holiday bungalow.
Accommodation:
The bungalow has three comfortable bedrooms (two doubles and
one single) with ensuite bathrooms with h/w showers, wash
basin and w/c. The rooms have overhead ceiling fans and are
furnished with single and double beds fitted with mosquito
netting.
Facilities:
The living and dining rooms are elegantly furnished
in a style that blends the old and the modern. Contemporary
art adorns the bungalow walls. Overhead fans, cement floors
and natural ventilation keeps the bungalow cool and airy.
The manager, Tilak Gamini, is on hand as necessary to ensure
that you have a pleasant holiday. He is also willing to share
insights into the cultivation and processing of cinnamon,
having managed the plantation for the last four years. The
bungalow also has a full-time cook and houseboy. Both Western
dishes and typical Sri Lakan rice & curries are served
using homemade condiments and fresh local fruit, vegetables
and seafood.
Excursions:
The plantation and the newly-renovated Cinnamon museum provide
an interesting on-site excursion. Otherwise the beaches are
the main appeal: Mirissa, Unawatuna and Weligama to name but
a few. The historic Galle Dutch Fort is located twenty minutes
drive from the bungalow. This UNESCO-protected World Heritage
site is a melting pot of cultural influences. Several hours
can be spent wandering along narrow streets and around the
sturdy ramparts overlooking the Indian Ocean. Several boutique
hotels within the fort offer fine dining. Day excursions are
possible to Sinharaja Rainforest, Uda Walalwe
