Location:
Sanda Kirana, a four-bedroom beach villa, is located in Thalpe,
one of the beautiful small bays just to the south of Galle.
The journey from Colombo’s International Airport will
take approximately four-and-a-half hours - or take the Air
Taxi and fly to Koggala, which is a 15-minute drive away from
the villa. The historic town of Galle is only 5 kms away.
Unawatuna beach, Mirissa bay and Koggala Lake are also nearby.
Description: 'Sanda Kirana' - meaning moonbeams
- aptly describes the light that dances on the ocean waters
on a full-moon night at this dreamy beachside home. The villa,
meticulously maintained by its English owners and friendly
Sri Lankan staff, is carefully designed to allow in natural
light and the ocean breeze through its many open verandahs,
halls and bedrooms. Time is unscheduled at Sanda Kirana: lie
in a hammock and let the rhythm of the waves put you to sleep;
or recline in a planter’s chair with a good book. The
villa offers excellent value-for-money and is suitable for
families although swimming is not possible on the villa's
doorstep because of a coral-shelf that hugs the coastline.
Safe swimming is about 100 yards down the beach.
Accommodation: Four spacious bedrooms with
ensuite bathrooms open out to the central courtyard. The master
bedroom has a private terrace with comfortable recliners.
The elegantly-furnished bedrooms use colours that blend beautifully
into the ocean setting - nothing intruding, just blues, sandstone
and shades of white. The comfortable four-poster beds are
dressed up with a swish of colour from traditional Saris.
Beds are fitted with mosquito nets and overhead fans cool
the rooms.
Facilities: Although designed by a leading
Australian architect, local architectural features have been
skillfully and sensitively incorporated into this villa. The
terracotta floors and weathered clay roof tiles help ease
the heat during midday. A central courtyard featuring a large
swimming pool, surrounding verandahs, open spaces that serve
as living and dining areas, all overlook a garden, strewn
with coconut trees, that slopes down to the beach. There is
also an inside living area with comfortable furniture, a small
library, satellite television and a CD player. Sanda Kirana
is well staffed to ensure your stay is comfortable, but at
the same time ensure your privacy. A nanny can be organized
on request for families traveling with children. Both Western
dishes and Sri Lankan rice and curry are served. Discuss your
menus with the chef and he will ensure that fresh vegetables
and seafood from the daily catch is prepared to your liking.
Accompany him if you wish to the local market to select your
own ingredients.
Excursions: Safe swimming is possible in
Unawatuna’s beautiful beaches. Several water sports
are on offer including deep sea fishing, catamaran and boat
rides, surfing, and snorkelling. High on the headland of Unawatuna
Bay is Rhumassala Temple. With beautiful views stretching
out over the Indian Ocean a walk around the headland near
the temple is very special. Famed for the natural medicinal
herbs nearby you will walk through hidden villages and verdant
jungle valleys eventually finding yourself on `Jungle Beach’
- a little known and secluded beach. Galle’s historic
17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is just
15 minutes away. Hours can be spent exploring the maze of
narrow streets lined with Dutch and British period buildings
still in use, the sturdy ramparts looking out to sea, the
growing collection of art galleries, antique shops, cafes
and restaurants.
