Location:
Sceir Thurtair meaning 'Reef of the Turtles' in Gaelic, is a new four bedroomed beach villa with beautiful views of the Indian Ocean. True to its name, this stretch of the West coast is famous for the endangered Marine Turtles that come ashore to nest. Kosgoda lies midway between the livelier beach villages of Bentota and Hikkaduwa, with Colombo about two-and-a-half hours to the north.
Description:
Sceir Thurtair is a brand new villa completed in August 2008. Caringly designed by its Irish owners, the beach villa is unique with stone walls, high ceilings in the lounge area and rooms located at a split level reached via a series of steps and overhead walkway. The living room opens out to a large circular swimming pool with fountains, waterslides and a pool bar ideal for children and adults alike. The sea right in front of the villa is suitable for strong swimmers duing the season from November to April. A few minutes walk takes you to a beautiful stretch of beach which is ideal for families with children.
Accommodation:
There are four spacious airconditioned bedrooms all with private terrace or balcony overlooking the swimming pool and the sea beyond. Two bedrooms are located on the ground floor, one bedroom on the first floor and the master suite is located on a level higher and has even more spectacular views from its front and back balconies. The ensuite bathrooms have h/w rain showers. Interiors are furnished with twin or king sized beds.
Facilities:
The ground floor lobby area opens directly out to the swimming pool and the sea beyond. The dining room with seating for 10 is located on the first floor and also has a large balcony for those wishing to dine outdoors. There is a fully equipped modern kitchen where Sri Lankan rice and curries and western meals prepared with fresh vegetables from the local market. Fresh seafood including prawns and crab are a specialty in this area and can be cooked to your liking. A bridge connects the Dining Room to the TV room which has wireless broadband facilities, a flat screen TV and DVD player. The meandering swimming pool which winds itself around the ground floor lounge area and ground floor bedrooms has a children’s pool at one end. There is a well stocked swim up bar with underwater stools. Next to this is a cabana on the beach which houses another beach bar and dining area which opens directly out to the sea.
Excursions:
Go out to sea in a catamaran with the fisherman or take
a boat ride along the tranquil Madu River past quaint rural
villages, en route, visit the local markets, temples &
craft and antique shops. Bentota and Hikkduwa offer a range
of watersports including banana-boating, water-skiing, jet-skiing,
and windsurfing. Go on a night excursion to observe Marine
Turtles laying their eggs. Globally, all seven species of
marine turtles existing are endangered. Out of these seven,
five species of sea turtles come ashore to nest in Sri Lanka.
The process of marine turtles nesting, hatchlings being
born, and swimming back to sea is an ancient and phenomenal
ritual that is fascinating to observe. Visit Kosgoda’s

Visit Lunuganga, a garden retreat that was originally an
old rubber plantation that Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka’s
