Location:
South Point Abbey is a restored colonial property
situated by the beachside in the fishing village of Kathaluwa,
just south of Galle. Just in front of the villa there is a
coral reef protected bay offering safe swimming, snorkeling
and diving. Located next door is the South Point Villa, a
sister property, owned by the same Sri Lankan family. Being
in close vicinity, these two villas are ideal for two families
or a group of friends travelling together. The journey from
Colombo’s International Airport will take approximately
four-and-a-half hours - or take the Air Taxi and fly to Koggala,
which is a
five-minute drive away from the Abbey. The historic Galle
Dutch Fort is only a 15 minutes drive. Unawatuna beach, Weligama
& Mirissa as well as Koggala Lake are also nearby.
Description:
South Point Abbey’s original building was constructed
during the Dutch colonial period using coral and limestone.
It has now been carefully restored to retain the old architectural
features of verandahs, high ceilings, large airy rooms, all
of which lets in plenty of fresh air, tropical sun and the
ocean breeze. The large timber terrace upstairs furnished
with comfortable recliners allows for relaxation and peaceful
contemplation. The downstairs terrace opens out to a garden
filled with mangroves. There is also an infinity pool with
beautiful views of the deep blue sea beyond. Families with
children are welcome here. A nanny can be organised to keep
the children entertained.
Accommodation:
South Point Abbey has three comfortable a/c rooms with attached
bathrooms. The rooms are furnished with large four-poster
beds and in one room there is a recliner that serves comfortably
as a child’s bed. The rooms upstairs open out to a large
covered timber deck overlooking the sea. The timber flooring
upstairs adds to the warm ambience of this villa, whilst the
aged terracotta flooring in the ground floor feels cool and
relaxing to your feet.
Facilities:
The living room and the den are furnished comfortably
with many places to flop down and relax. The bookshelves are
well stocked with interesting titles. There is satellite TV
and a DVD player for in-house entertainment. The downstairs
terrace opens out to a garden filled with mangroves. There
is also an infinity pool with beautiful views of the deep
blue sea beyond. If you’re a ardent chef, the well-equipped
kitchen is perfect to do your own cooking – or be pampered
and just discuss your preferred menus with the in-house chef,
who will gladly turn out tasty meals using fresh vegetables
and sea food brought on the doorstep from the village’s
fishermen. The Abbey is fully staffed including a Guest Relations
Manager, Vasanthi, who is on duty from 7am to 6.30pm daily
and manages both the Abbey and South Point Villa next door.
Excursions:
The coral bay allows for safe swimming and snorkelling
just a few yards away from the house. A boat can be rented
from Mirissa for those interested in day or night fishing.
An experienced fisherman will accompany you to ensure safety.
Surfing in Unawatuna or a boat ride in Koggala Lake with its
many islands and numerous species of birds, are all just a
few minutes walk away from the Abbey. A 15-minute drive will
take you to the historical city of Galle, with its Dutch Fort,
a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site and a melting pot of
cultural influences. Explore the ramparts overlooking the
cricket stadium, the lighthouse staring into the Indian Ocean,
its narrow streets, interesting antique shops, restaurants
and boutique hotels full of character.
