Location:
South Point is an impressive south coast villa, situated
by the beachside in the fishing hamlet of Kathaluwa near Galle.
The garden steps out directly onto a stretch of white sandy
beach that is safe for children. The sea at this point, with
its beautiful coral formations, provides relatively safe swimming,
snorkelling and diving. The journey to South Point Villa from
Colombo’s International Airport will take approximately
four hours - or take the Air Taxi and fly to Koggala, which
is a five-minute drive away from the villa. The historic Galle
Dutch Fort is only a 15 minutes drive. Unawatuna beach, Weligama
& Mirissa as well as Koggala Lake are also nearby.
Description:
South Point Villa is a modern villa with smart and
stylish interiors. The hospitality here resembles a typical
Sri Lankan home – caring, warm and gentle with your
comfort and needs always a priority. For families travelling
with children, a nanny can be organised. The idyllic location
of this villa, just a few feet away from the beach, lends
itself naturally for a perfect beach holiday. Relax on the
lawn with a good book, have an afternoon siesta in the shade
of some mangroves, or dine by candlelight on the wooden-decked
terrace. The picture-postcard views, including stilt fisherman
on the distant horizon, make this place inspirational for
artists and writers alike. The owners also have a neighbouring
property, called South Point Abbey, which is a colonial beach
house. A connecting door gives direct access making the two
properties ideal for two families travelling together.
Accommodation: The three large a/c bedrooms
have inviting four-poster beds with overhead canopies fitted
tastefully with mosquito nets. The master bedroom has two
four-poster beds with a direct sea view. An antique Almairah,
a bureau to do your writing, satellite TV, DVD player, internet
access, are all part of the luxurious facilties in each of
the bedrooms. Teak and Asian oak floors adds to the warmth
of this house. All the rooms have ensuite bathrooms with ‘his
and her’ washbasins, hot/w showers and a range of herbal
soaps.
Facilities:
The main living area includes a combined sitting
and dining room, tastefully furnished with an Indonesian flourish,
and a wooden-decked terrace that provides for wonderful alfresco
meals. There is a freshwater swimming pool in a side garden
with its own ‘Jacuzzi bench’ at one end with views
of the sea, perfect for the blood-red sunsets. The grassed
frontage is ideal for sunbathing and snoozing. Western dishes
and Sri Lakan rice and curries using locally available ingredients
are served. Fresh seafood dishes prepared from the catch of
the day are a speciality. If you wish to do your own cooking,
there is a well-equipped modern kitchen with the in-house
chef giving you a helping hand. The villa is fully staffed
inclusive of an English speaking Public Relations manager,
Vasanthi, who is on duty from 7am to 6.30pm daily. The staff
is helpful, courteous and eager to please, whilst also sensitive
to the need for privacy.
Excursions: There is good snorkelling in
unspoilt coral pools just in front of the Villa. Boats can
be arranged from Mirissa further ahead, for day or night fishing,
accompanied by experienced fishermen. Surfing is ideal at
Unawatuna, laden with small and rustic beach bar shacks; just
a few minutes walk away. A boat ride on Koggala Lake with
its many islands is another wonderful experience just walking
distance inland from the villa. Eagle Island with about 100
nesting Eagles, and other small islands with nesting parrots,
and a variety of bird species makes Koggala Lake a bird watcher's
delight. The historical town of Galle, with its Dutch Fort,
a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site and a melting pot of
cultural influences, is just a 15-minute drive from South
Point Villa. With its well-preserved ramparts overlooking
the cricket stadium, lighthouse staring into the Indian Ocean,
narrow streets, interesting restaurants and boutique hotels
full of character, Galle Fort deserves hours of exploration.
