Location:
Teak House is situated on 1.5 acres of hillside coconut
grove just a few kilometres west of Tangalle, a beautiful
and unspoilt stretch of the south coast. Colombo to Tangalle
is 195km so you should allow at least six hours for the journey.
From Galle the journey will take approximately two hours.
Tangalle is an ideal location for breaking a journey from
the southern highlands to the Galle coast.
Description:
Minutes from the Seenimodera coastline, the two-bedroom
Teak House is a delightful teak chalet with a natural and
relaxing atmosphere. Benefiting from a constant breeze from
the ocean below, the property is unpretentious yet extremely
comfortable and welcoming. It is a good-value property well-suited
for romantic getaways (ideal for a honeymoon or two couples)
and small families or groups of friends.
Accommodation:
There are two spacious en suite bedrooms that are well furnished
and tastefully decorated. The bathrooms have h/w showers.
Facilities:
The two bedrooms are separated with an open-plan
sitting, dining and kitchen area, which looks down through
a small forest of coconut trees to the Seenimodera coastline
beyond. There is a large garden area and good views (although
slightly obstructed by a fence) down to the bay, a one-minute
stroll away. Roshan, the house boy, will do all your shopping
and food preparation. The Teak House is within easy walking
distance of the beach. There is no swimming pool. Amanwella,
perhaps the most upmarket boutique hotel on the island, is
close by if you pine for a lavish dinner or some pampering
in their spa. There are other simpler beachside eating-out
options in the area.
Excursions:
Day trips to Yala National Park, Sinharaja Rainforest and
Uda Walawe National Park can be arranged. Visit Rekuwa, a
small fishing village near Tangalle where a fascinating Marine
Turtle conservation project is established. Tangalle and the
surrounding areas are renowned for its superb unspoiled and
undeveloped beaches. Based at Mirissa Harbour, Mirissa Water
Sports offers several activities including whale watching,
snorkelling, sailing, river trips, and sea kayaking. Mirissa
Water Sports is a charitable organization which helps to generate
employment for the youth from the tsunami-affected coastal
areas. We also recommend a visit to the historic city of Galle
and its 17th century Dutch Fort – a UNESCO World Heritage
Site. Much of the old Fort, a small walled city with about
300 homes and an old-world feel, still remains with its well-preserved
bastions, public buildings, churches, lighthouse and a maze
of narrow streets.
