Location:
Hikkaduwa lies at the heart of the palm-fringed West
coast, conveniently placed for the historic town of Galle.
This small beach resort sprang to prominence as a favourite
hippy haunt on the Sixties backpacker trail. It retains a
youthful, informal feel, with a good scattering of beachside
bars (particularly lively at weekends) and great-value fish
restaurants. Tropical Beach House, more accurately, lies in
Thiranagama, half a mile south of Hikkaduwa.
Description:
Tropical Beach House is a small and simple English-owned
property, offering basic Western comforts in a glorious tropical
beachfront setting. It is a friendly and homely spot, with
welcoming staff, a perfect spot for chilling alongside one
of the finest beaches on the island. Outside, the veranda
has dimmer-switch lighting and the enclosed, shady front garden
beyond looks out onto the beach and is ideal for children.
Facilities:
Two double bedrooms have a/c, bathrooms with hot-water
showers, coconut-wood beds, locally-made furniture, brightened
by local batiks and paintings. There is also security boxes
in each room (owner advises "you can bring your own padlock"!).
The house has a fully-fitted kitchen with fridge freezer,
washing machine and gas oven. Dining room has teak dining
table and six chairs. There are a selection of board games
and books available and Chintaka, the housekeeper, and Mahinda,
the manager, are available for help and advice.
Note:
Prices shown below are for self-catering, room only, and also
include airport transfers in modern a/c minivan. Short-stay
or one-room lets may be available in off-peak season.
