Location:
Villa Kusum has a privileged aspect on the palm-fringed
West coast, conveniently placed both for the historic town
of Galle and the informal beach resort of Hikkaduwa, with
its long, sandy bay, good scattering of beachside bars (particularly
lively at weekends) and great-value fish restaurants. Villa
Kusum lies about three miles south of Hikkaduwa in the coastal
hamlet of Dodanduwa.
Description:
Villa Kusum offers some of the most luxurious accommodation
close to the predominantly budget and mid-market resort of
Hikkaduwa. Its Dutch owners have developed a private house
with high levels of personal service and comfort, interesting
individual flourishes and no little charm. Care has been taken
with its unfussy antique furniture and tidy, if narrow, landscaped
garden, which leads directly past the swimming pool onto a
quiet stretch of sandy beach. What Villa Kusum may lack in
facilities it may more than makes up for in its intimate and
charming atmosphere.
Accommodation: Villa Kusum possesses two
suites and two rooms, all of which have en suite facilities,
a/c and four-poster beds with good-quality mattresses, polished
wooden floors and traditional furniture. The Ceylon Suite
lies on the first floor and has a spacious bedroom/living
area. It is distinctive for a well-appointed bathroom with
a Jacuzzi in the bath and a separate shower. The Colonial
Suite is also on the first floor with a large living/bedroom
area with table, chairs and chaise longue, bathroom with shower
and a balcony with wicker chairs, overlooking the Indian ocean.
The Dutch room is the third room on the first floor, located
at the side of the house and with a surprisingly large shower
area. It is the cheapest of the four options.
The VOC Penthouse room is the only room on the second floor.
It is another sizeable room, with nooks and crannies and views
over the ocean. Villa Kusum recommends it as the best long-stay
option when special rates may be available.
Facilities:
Villa Kusum strives to provide a fine-dining restaurant.
Chef specialities include Western cooking -- in summer 2007
he visited France to study French methods -- Oriental, and
fish dishes fresh from the daily market. Dinner is a four-course
fine-dining menu served by candelight and an a la carte menu
is also available. Dining on the beach, under the stars, is
also possible on request. A healthy appetite is well rewarded
here. Bed and breakfast terms also include complimentary coffee
and cake in mid-morning and afternoon tea, which is served
either in your room, by the pool or even on the beach. There
is no need to rush in the morning to reserve a sun lounger.
By the swimming pool , which also possesses a Jacuzzi, your
own sunbed, with beach towel, awaits you.
