Location: Situated amidst tall shady trees and landscaped gardens, this four bedroomed beachside villa with a comprehensive Ayurveda programme, is located in the fishing village of Mihiripenna just 15 minutes from the historic city of Galle. Wadugewatta is ideally located to explore the diverse southern heritage and the sun-kissed beaches of the south coast. The journey from Colombo's International Airport will take about 4.5 hours or take the air taxi to nearby Koggala.
Description: Designed by the British owners themselves, Wadugewatta is a spacious and airy beach villa that is immersed in tropical gardens leading to a secluded beach. Hidden away in the grounds there is a further building housing an Ayurveda clinic that the British owners have developed for the benefit of the surrounding village community. At the clinic, an experienced Ayurvedic physician provides curative treatments for children, adults and the aged. There are separate Ayurveda facilities for the use of guests staying at the beach villa. Relax in a hammock by the sea, dine outdoors under the trees or immerse yourself in the ancient healing wisdom of Ayurveda. Wadugewatte is a homely holiday villa with tastefully decorated interiors furnished with antiques and artifacts from Sri Lanka, Japan and China.
Accommodation: There are three doubles and one twin room that can accommodate upto eight adults and one or two children. Two double rooms have courtyard gardens, private seating areas, ensuite open-air bathrooms with hot water shower, and are furnished with king sized beds fitted with mosquito netting. The third double room and the twin room, also with seating areas, each has its own open air bathroom located just across the hallway. Rooms do not have airconditioning. Instead overhead fans and the ocean breezes keeps the rooms cool and airy.
Facilities: A spacious living and dining area opens out to the swimming pool and lush tropical gardens. Alfresco dining is possible by the poolside. A library is located on the mezzanine floor. There is a well equipped kitchen for those wishing to do their own cooking or discuss your preferences with the in-house cook and she will be happy to do your grocery shopping as well as prepare tasty rice and curries. Fresh vegetables can be purchased from the village market and seafood is brought directly to the doorstep by fisherman. Other staff at Wadugewatta includes an English speaking manager, a houseboy, a steward and a gardener. The Ayurveda centre with flower baths and treatment rooms offers relaxing massages and curative therapies supervised by the Ayurvedic physician.
Excursions: The cove beyond the garden of the villa – ideal for a sunset drink or barbeque, has a coral reef which makes swimming impractical. However, the beach a stroll of 200 years away is perfect for swimming during the season from October to April. For those interested in surfing and watersports, the beaches of Unawatuna and Mirissa are ideal. Water sports on offer include sailing, fishing, coastal cruises, river trips, sea kayaking, snorkeling and boating. Koggala Lake, with its many tiny islands inhabited with several species of birds, is another wonderful experience. We recommend a visit to the historic 17th century Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with narrow streets lined with Dutch and British colonial era buildings which are still in use, sturdy ramparts looking out to sea, the lighthouse, and a growing collection of art galleries and several boutique hotels.
