Location: Ambassadors is a newly refurbished five-bedroom
villa in Galle Fort, a magical walled 300-year-old town on
Sri Lanka's south-west coast. Largely built by the Dutch during
the 18th Century, the Fort is in the midst of an exciting
architectural and cultural renaissance. The journey from Colombo’s
International Airport will take approximately four-and-a-half
hours - or take the Air Taxi and fly to Koggala, which is
a 25-minute drive to Galle Fort.
Description: Ambassadors is an extremely
spacious five-bedroom villa that has been carefully restored
and refurbished by its English owners. Enter through a small
roadside gate to see a small tropical garden filled with green
palms and frangipani. The main sitting room, an entirely separate
structure to the main house, is enormous with beautiful high
ceilings to ensure a comfortable cool climate on even the
most steamy Sri Lankan afternoon, comfortable cushioned sofas
and some exquisite antiques, including Jaffna tables, Indonesian
sculptures and one giant ebony almairah. Note: there is no
longer a swimming pool.
Accommodation: Ambassadors has four double
bedrooms and one twin-bedded bedroom. The master bedroom upstairs
has an adjoining room for children. Three of the bedrooms
have a/c. The bedrooms are tastefully designed with connecting
bathrooms with showers.
Facilities: The property stretches back a
long way from the road to a central sitting and dining area
next to a smart and well-designed kitchen with modern appliances.
Fulltime staff consists of a houseboy, room girl and general
helper. A chef is expected to join the team soon. Sri Lankan
breakfast of eggs, juices, jams and tea and coffee is included
but all other meals are for your account.
Excursions: Some 600 houses crowd the narrow
yet predominantly peaceful streets in the Fort. Largely built
by the Dutch during the 18th Century, Galle Fort is another
of Sri Lanka's World Heritage sites. The ramparts are used
for romantic strolls as well as early morning power walks
as well, of course, for boisterous ad-hoc cricket games. They
also provide an excellent vantage point to capture the atmosphere
of an international Test match in the rebuilt ground below.
Galle Fort has a number of small beaches that are suitable
for morning swims whilst the sunbathing and surfing beaches
are within easy reach by tuk-tuk or taxi.
