Location: Mama’s is quite a rarity in a Galle Fort more associated with luxury hotels and villas. This is a welcoming guest house valued for its delicious home-cooked meals at appetizing prices. Located down Leyn Barn Street, it is a few minutes away from the old Ramparts, the light house, museums, shops, bars and restaurants. The journey from Colombo’s International Airport will take approximately 4 hours.
Description: Housed in a small two storey refurbished colonial house, Mama’s is a two-bedroomed guest house run by a friendly and courteous Sri Lankan couple, Jerome and Malini, who caring supervision ensures that guests have a wonderful stay. Mama’s Roof Top Café, a popular dining venue in the Fort, serves Sri Lankan rice and curries and western dishes prepared by Malini herself.
Accommodation: The two a/c bedrooms are located on the upper floor and have attached bathrooms with h/w shower, wash basin and w/c. Both rooms are clean and comfortably furnished with twin beds that can be put together, dressing table, and work desk. One room is more spacious and has a small sitting area while the other which is smaller, has a balcony that opens out to Leyn Barn Street. Both rooms have IDD phone.
Facilities: A small lounge and dining area is located on the ground floor. There is also a roof terrace restaurant with wonderful views of the Indian Ocean and the Fort with its clay tiled roofs, lighthouse, Dutch period churches, mosque, and Buddhist temples. Other facilities include room service, laundry service, internet, TV in the lounge area, doctor on call and safe. Mama’s has its own vehicle that can take guests to the nearby beaches and excursions outside Galle Fort.
Excursions: Lying within the walls of this 17th century Dutch Fort, Mama’s is an ideal base from which to explore its heritage and see life unfold each morning within the Fort. Hours can be spent exploring the maze of narrow streets lined with Dutch and British period buildings still in use, the sturdy ramparts looking out to sea, the growing collection of art galleries, antique shops, cafes and restaurants. There are some fine beaches just outside of the Fort including Wijaya, Unawatuna, Mirissa and Hikkaduwa.
