Location: Located in the
heart of Galle’s historic 17th century Dutch Fort, a
UNESCO World Heritage Site, Palm Villa is a fully-restored
three-bedroom villa which dates back to the early 1700s. The
careful restoration blends old world charm with stylish interiors
and modern conveniences and makes this villa an ideal holiday
retreat for a family with children or friends travelling together.
The journey from Colombo’s International Airport will
take approximately four hours - or take the Air Taxi and fly
to Koggala, which is a 15 - minute drive to Galle Fort.
Description: Palm Villla is one of the oldest
houses inside the Galle Fort and has been restored re-using
a lot of the original timber, including antique doors and
windows, lintels and beams and high wooden ceilings. In contrast,
the interiors are light and furnished with modern sofas, leather
chairs, contemporary art and polished white cement flooring
that insist on a barefoot life – all of which gives
Palm Villa a stylish but more informal and homely feel.
Accommodation: There are three suites –
2 doubles and one twin all with ensuite bathrooms. Two suites
are located on the ground floor and the master suite is upstairs.
The spacious rooms have high ceilings with large windows.
The interiors are stylish with a blend of antiques and contemporary
furnishings. The a/c master bedroom upstairs opens out to
a verandah and roof top terrace with views over Fort’s
rooftops and the sea beyond. The master bathroom has twin
vanities, a large copper tub as well as h/w shower.
Facilities: A large 50 ft. open-plan sitting
and dining room leads through several archways to the landscaped
garden and swimming pool. The sitting room is furnished with
comfortable sofas and leather chairs. Meals are served at
the elegant, ten--seater dining table or on the rooftop under
the stars. The roof terrace which can be shaded or left open
is furnished with recliners and is ideal for soaking up the
sun, candlelit dinners or even a yoga session. There is a
modern kitchen finished with white cement flooring and green
terrazzo counter tops. Whilst the house is given on a self-catering
basis, a cook can be arranged at an extra cost. The houseboy,
who sleeps in, will prepare breakfast, help with other meals,
as well as do the shopping if you wish. A room-girl comes
in daily to clean.
Excursions: Galle Fort is like no where else
in Sri Lanka. Enter through the 'new' English gate or the
'old' Dutch gate and enter a different country. Renovated
Dutch architecture of some of the 600 odd houses crowd the
narrow streets in this 90-acre World Heritage Site. The Ramparts
are used for romantic strolls as well as early morning power
walks as well - of course - for local 'village' cricket games.
Bustling during the day but quiet at night, Galle Fort provides
an exceptional and historic base from which to experience
Sri Lanka. Palm Villa is centrally located in the Fort, close
to a number of café’s, boutique shops and restaurants.
A number of small beaches that is suitable for morning swims
are a walk away just outside the fort, whilst some of Sri
Lanka’s best sunbathing beaches are only a short tri-shaw
ride away in Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa.
