Location:
Bougan Villa is set on a hillock in the rural village of Handessa just 20 minutes from Kandy. It overlooks lush paddyfields and is surrounded by the Hantana Mountains. It is about 4 kms inland from the Peradeniya Bridge and is convenient for Pinnawela elephant orphanage as well as Kandy’s ancient temples. The journey from Colombo’s International Airport will take about three-and-a-half hours.
Description:
Bougan Villa is more a guest house than a villa and offers much privacy in a rural environment offering a true experience of Kandyan village life. The owners, Shirlene and Jim, provide a caring and restful atmosphere. Laze on the verandah and watch the villagers tend to their paddy fields, go for a stroll along the village roads and visit ancient temples, learn to cook rice and curries in clay pots over a hearth, or enjoy a sumptuous candlelit dinner in the garden.
Accommodation:
Four bedrooms in all, three of which open out to the verandah and front garden. These rooms have good views of the paddy fields and mountain beyond and are furnished with double beds fitted with mosquito netting. Pedestal fans and the cooling hill country climate help to keep these rooms comfortable. Facilities include a music system and ensuite bathrooms with bathtub and h/w showers. The upper floor has an additional double room with overhead ceiling fan and a larger bathroom.
Facilities:
The main house has a large verandah and dining area. Delicious home cooking is personally supervised by Shirlene. Sri Lankan, Indian, Italian, Chinese and Continental dishes are served here prepared with fresh vegetables and rice from their own gardens. Those wanting to learn Sri Lankan cuisine are welcome in the kitchen where villagers are invited frequently to demonstrate the preparation of traditional desserts such as Kavum and Kokis. There is also a cosy lounge area with a fireplace, piano and television. The verandas have wi-fi internet.
Excursions:
Walk to the Handessa tea estate, perhaps stopping for a king coconut on the way. Visit the ancient temples of Embekke, Gadaladeniya and Lankatillake. These nearby temples date back to the Kandyan Kingdom and are adorned with ornate columns, temple paintings and statues. Gadaladeniya is also famous for handmade brass wear including oil lamps and wall hangings. Visit the Temple of the Tooth situated in Kandy town where a sacred tooth relic of the Lord Buddha is enshrined since 4th Century A.D. Visit the Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage which was set-up to protect the island’s abandoned or orphaned wild elephants. Roaming free within the Sanctuary, except when occasionally shepherded by their Mahouts (keepers), the elephants and the tourist’s highlight of the day is their regular bathing sessions in the nearby river.
