Location:
The Colonial House is a refurbished plantation bungalow
offering the rare opportunity of quality accommodation close
to the popular west coast. It lies about 15 km inland from
Kalutara, near Tebuwana on a 50-acre rubber and tea plantation
and enjoys stirring views of the Kalu River, mountain ranges
and even the distant coast. It is particularly convenient
for the beaches of Kalutara and Beruwela, whilst also offering
the chance to escape the beach-set in stunning natural surroundings
making it suitable for families or older couples. Colombo
is about one-and-a-half hours to the north.
Details:
The Colonial House, built by British planters around 1870
and caringly renovated by its new British owners, is the
finest of bungalows, with pillared verandas and high wooden
ceilings. It sits high on a hill top near the tiny village
of Tebuwana. A paved road is being built, with a 10 min
drive from the bottom of the hill to the bungalow. The seclusion
offered by the surrounding rubber trees and tea bushes is
enhanced by its own two-acre garden which possesses exotic
flowers and fruit trees. The bungalow can be offered in
whole or part and is normally sold on a full-board basis,
offering breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Samatha,
an experienced and much-prized chef, is flexible to individual
requests and has a large range of Western and Sri Lankan
dishes. The bungalow can be offered in whole or part and
is normally sold on a full-board basis. It generally sleeps
eight, but extra beds can be supplied on request for a maximum
occupancy of 12.
Facilities:
Four luxurious suites are named after Sri Lankan rivers:
Kalu, Mahaweli, Walawe and Kelani. Each suite comprises
a spacious bedroom, sitting area, dressing room, well-appointed
en-suite bathroom and private verandah. Suites have individual
a/c and ceiling fans, tv/dvd and cd players. The Kalu and
Mahaweli Suites both have king-size four-poster beds and
French doors opening onto views of the garden, pool and
Kalu River. The Walawe suite also has a king-sized four-poster
and is located to the rear, but a side veranda offers similar
views. The Kelani suite has two single beds and its veranda
looks to the rear, with fine garden views.
Facilities: Meals are served in the privacy
of your own veranda, in the garden or by the pool. Western
dishes as well as Sri Lankan cuisine are on offer. There
is a spacious colonial-style sitting room with planters’
chairs in the veranda. The two acre landscaped gardens are
filled with exotic flowers and fruit trees including coconut,
banana, mango, and papaya. At the foot of the garden, a
large fresh water swimming pool is built into the rock and
has wonderful panoramic views. Other activities include
several indoor games, a clay tennis court, badminton, and
table-tennis.
Excursions: Go on guided walks around the
plantation where rubber tappers and tea pluckers are at
work. Bird watching is rewarding here within the extensive
gardens and the 50 acre estate beyond belonging to the Colonial
House. Binoculars are on hand at the house to enable guests
to have a closer look.
