Location:
Hideaway is a restored three-bedroom colonial mansion set in
a peaceful coconut and pineapple estate in the small town of
Wathuregama, just outside Colombo and within an hour’s
drive of the international airport. The boutique-style villa
provides an ideal weekend retreat for those living and working
in Sri Lanka, and a fine landing point for those visiting from
overseas, allowing you to gently relax and unwind in a peaceful
rural setting.
Description: This lovely new property has been
carefully and tastefully converted into a small and luxurious
boutique villa by its Sri Lankan owners. The attention to detail
is impressive, from the welcoming betel leaf and refreshing
pineapple juice on arrival to the soft white cotton sheets on
the beds. The interior décor mixes old antiques with
modern touches. The evenings are special as oil lamps ring the
small pond and sweet scented oils waft through the villa. The
staff is ever-smiling and discreet. Hideaway is rented to only
one party at a time ensuring guests privacy and the use of the
entire villa. The decision to develop the property in an unusual
location was bold, but it is a true to its name – this
is a wonderful hideaway.
Accommodation: There are two suites –
Sun and Moon, and a deluxe room called Stars – all decorated
in warm colours and mood lighting, giving each room a character
of its own. The interiors are spacious and romantic with antique
four poster beds dressed in fine white linen. The attached outdoor
bathrooms are special with open air Jacuzzi that is ideal for
soaking your cares away.
Facilities: The living room has a large TV, DVD player
with surround sound. Guests are free to choose from the owner’s
extensive collection of movies and music. There are no meal
times here at Hideaway. Food is served at any time you wish
and can be had in the main dining room or outdoors. The food
– especially the fruit juices – gets good reviews
and the Colombo trained chef is capable of preparing an extensive
range of dishes from traditional Sri Lankan curries to lamb
and apricot pie. Most of the vegetables and some of the fruits
are grown in Hideaway’s very own organic garden.
Excursions: There are nearby Buddhist caves
well-worth visiting and the villa also organizes adventurous
excursions further a field, including mountain biking, nature
trails, deep sea fishing and even rock climbing. The Pinnawela
Elephant Orphanage is just over one hour’s drive away.
