Location: Java Moon is a tranquil and secluded
property consisting of three self-contained individual cottages
on the edge of Bolgoda Lake. Located in Piliyandala, a suburb
of Colombo and only 40 minutes drive south from the city centre,
Java Moon is an ideal location to rest and rejuvenate at the
beginning or end of your holiday in Sri Lanka. The airport
is a one-and-a-half hour drive from Java Moon which, as it
lies south of the capital, enables you to make a dash to the
west coast beaches or southern highlands the following morning
without fear of becoming snarled in rush-hour traffic.
Description: Java Moon is a tempting alternative
to the bustle of Colombo. Its lush gardens with tall bamboo,
tropical palms and flamboyant trees, bird song and playful
breezes off the serene Bolgoda Lake make this villa ideal
for a romantic getaway, a family holiday or for friends traveling
together. The cottages are works of art with each following
a different colour palate – saffron orange, ochre, sea
blues, emerald greens and sandstone. Walls, bathroom windows,
even the sari curtains are all drenched in soft hues adding
to the romance of this wonderful place. Many tranquil spaces
encourage reading, meditation and contemplation. Children
will enjoy the garden space, necessarily supervised by adults,
since the property borders the lake. Staff will assist in
babysitting. Numerous birds, a pet tortoise, cats and an occasional
monkey that passes by on the treetops, will keep the children
entertained.
Accommodation: Java Moon consists of three
individual cottages, each able to accommodate two adults and
a child and incorporates local architectural features, such
as verandahs and courtyards that welcome the fresh air and
tropical sun. Each of the cottages has a bedroom, ensuite
bathroom with hot and cold showers, dining and lounge areas
and is furnished with antique Dutch period furniture. Treasured
pieces of art, murals and sculptures adorn the walls and corridors.
The main cottage located just by the lake enjoys the best
views and opens out to the swimming pool -- although this
cottage lacks a/c and is cooled by ceiling fans and the lake
breeze. The smaller cottage at the back has an a/c double
room and opens out to a paved terrace with shady trees and
other foliage. The third cottage located in the front garden
has a/c and lake views.
Facilities: Java Moon is managed by Max and
Gwen, a friendly English-speaking couple known for gentle
smiles, caring service, and Gwen’s home cooked food.
Java Moon, described by one of its guests as a `little piece
of paradise’, is visited frequently by its Sri Lankan
owners, Anitra and Dirk, who ensure that it is well-maintained.
Meals are served when and wherever you please – on the
verandah by the poolside or in the garden overlooking the
lake. Both Western dishes and Sri Lankan rice and curry are
served. Discuss your menus with Gwen, the in-house chef, who
prepares feasts from the local fresh fruit, vegetables, and
seafood. Her BBQ’s are a speciality and can be enjoyed
by the lake on a star-filled night. Herbal massagea can also
be organised.
Excursions: Fishing on the lake for estuarine
perch (Modha, Barramundi), canoeing or riding in a traditional
catamaran. Java Moon has it own small rowing boat, which is
moored to a private pier that can be used at any time by guests.
Explore the suburbs of Colombo with its many wayside boutiques,
temples and Kovils, and the beaches of Mt. Lavinia, Wadduwa,
and Kalutara with quaint beachside restaurants. For city types,
a 30-minute drive into Colombo provides opportunities for
shopping, entertainment and
fine-dining.
