comments: “A peaceful haven. We will miss the
bird watching, the cow, the egret, the delightful staff, the
serene pool and the delicious meals.” PS, UK
Location:
Set in sumptuous tropical gardens, Surangana (the literal translation
of which is 'Angel') is a haven of peace and calm close to Galle.
Close enough to the south coast beaches to enjoy them but far
enough so as to escape the tourist scene and enjoy real rural
Sri Lanka. Galle is a 15-min drive away. Mirissa’s beautiful
beaches are also nearby.
The drive from Colombo’s International Airport is about
four-and-a-half hours.
Description:
Surangana is a large colonial villa nesting atop a hill looking
across paddy fields and onto Koggala Lake. The views are inspirational.
Watch migrating birds in tight formation return to Koggala Lake
for temporary residence whilst listening to the roar of the
Indian Ocean in the background. A peaceful and comfortable villa
ideal for quiet reflection and relaxation.
Accommodation:
Four double bedrooms cooled by overhead fans and gentle breezes
all with four-poster beds and fitted mosquito nets. The master
bedroom has an ensuite shower situated in a private walled garden.
All other bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms with showers.
Facilities:
The sitting area is an enclosed room kept cool with a high ceiling
and breezes off the paddy fields. A gorgeous infinity pool gives
the feeling you could reach out and touch the paddy with your
next stroke. There is a well-equipped kitchen and a team of
five staff including a cook, housekeeper and two gardeners.
In addition, a watcher ensures you are not disturbed.
Excursions:
Explore the islands of Koggala including Fish Eagle Island where
many eagles come to nest at dusk; Madolduwa, which has remains
of Martin Wickramasinghe’s (a famous local poet and author)
original home; and Cinnamon Island where four village families
process cinnamon into essential oils. Visit the Koggala Folk
Museum that provides an insight into Sri Lankan Folk culture.
Galle’s historic 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site is just 15 minutes away. Hours can be spent walking
the ramparts and exploring the narrow streets lined with Dutch
and British period buildings and a swelling number of art galleries,
antique shops and cafes. Watersports are possible on the beautiful,
sandy south coast.
