Location:
Set on a quiet lakeside where sights and sounds of nature reign
supreme, it’s hard to imagine that Villa Talangama is
located within a suburb of Colombo, just a 20 minute drive to
the heart of the city. The property – sold by the room
– is an ideal first stop on your holiday itinerary, a
place where you can relax and unwind after a long flight. The
airport is a 75-minute drive away and the villa is located in
close proximity to main routes to the hill country as well as
the coastal beaches.
Description: The villa setting is best described
as a `village in the city’ surrounded by paddy fields,
lotus filled lakes and birds everywhere - perched on the veranda,
on trees, and even on the buffalo that relax on the lakeside.
Villa Talangama is a luxurious Sri Lankan home meticulously
layed out from its architecture and furnishings to the caring
service of its staff. In the words of recent guests from UK:
“Every place we perched, every view we had, every sound
we heard and every dish we ate was heavenly! We cannot think
of a better place to have started and ended our holiday in Sri
Lanka. In fact we found it difficult to find anywhere that matched
up to this place during our travels…. there is certainly
something special about this villa – the beautiful décor,
the welcoming atmosphere, the food, the service and the surroundings”’
Facilities: Villa Talangama is a three-bed
roomed luxurious villa that comfortably accommodates upto five
adults. The villa is typical of Sri Lankan architecture infused
with contemporary touches: columns and verandas that skirt around
the villa, large doors and windows opening out to the swimming
pool, the gardens and the wetlands beyond, cooling cement floors
and open-air bathrooms, timber ceilings and clay-tiled roofs.
The ground floor of this villa consists of living, dining and
many lounging spaces by the poolside or in the veranda by the
ponds. The tastefully furnished airconditioned bedrooms are
on the upper floor opening out to scenic views of the Talangama
wetlands. The bedrooms consist of one double bedroom with an
ensuite bathroom, one twin bedroom and one single bedroom with
a shared bathroom. The upstair lounge area consists of a flat
screen TV, CD player and an interesting library including many
titles on Sri Lanka. Due to low staircase railings upstairs,
Villa Talangama is not recommended for children below 8 years.
Meals are served when and wherever you please – al fresco
dining by the poolside or in the elegantly layed out dining
room facing an ochre colored, pebbled courtyard. Both Western
dishes and Sri Lankan rice and curry using locally available
ingredients are served. If you wish, you are welcome in the
spacious and modern kitchen to do your own cooking with Pathmanathan,
the in-house chef giving you a helping hand, or just sit back
and choose from one of the menus on offer.
Staffing: The villa is fully staffed with a
chef, house-keeping staff and an English-speaking manager who
are all helpful and eager to please, but at the same time ensure
your privacy. Villa Talangama is a special holiday home for
its Sri Lankan owners, who frequently visit the villa and ensure
that it is well-maintained.
Excursions: The surrounding Talangama wetlands
is a birder’s paradise with over 45 species of birds inhabiting
this area including Purple Swamp hens, Pheasant-tailed Jacanas,
White-breasted Water hens and Spotted Doves, along with the
endemic Purple-faced Leaf Monkeys, water monitors and numerous
species of butterflies. Walk along the gravel roads just outside
the doors of the villa where village life unfolds. Stop at a
wayside boutique for a cup of tea and a banana. For those wanting
more action, two Golf clubs – Water’s Edge Country
Club and the Royal Colombo Golf Club are located close-by. Many
options for shopping, dining, and entertainment are available
in the city of Colombo just a 20-minute drive away from the
Villa.
