| Colombo Test Accommodation |
Colombo has always been one of the most unsung capitals
in south and south-east Asia, but even in challenging times
this compact and easily-explored city is welcoming and accessible
and should no longer be dismissed lightly. Nowhere elese in
the region will you find restaurants -- some of them world-class
-- at such cheap prices. Add a selection of characterful bars
and trendy cafes and this will ensure an uplifting atmosphere
when England are in town.

Casa
Colombo is the latest 12-suite boutique hotel to
open in the heart of Colombo. Blending old world
charm with contemporary design, Casa is housed in
a 200-year-old Moorish grand mansion. The restoration
of this magnificent heritage property is a triumph
with its original components - intricate mosaic
floors, molded ceilings, ornate balconies and window
awnings - all been retained and blended successfully
with vibrant colours, neon lighting, contemporary
furniture using elements of cement, hard wood, brushed
steel, and copper; black and white photography,
and the latest in HiFi and WiFi cutting-edge technology.
The end result is a contemporary "Retro chic"
boutique hotel that prides itself on a highly personalized
service. |

| Trans
Asia Hotel, Colombo |
|
 |
Another
excellent Colombo five-star, although in our opinion
overshadowed of late by the fast-improving Colombo
Plaza. TransAsia enjoys a private location alongside
Biera Lake and offers excellent all-round facilities.

This
three-storey house is a secluded and stylish hideaway,
a gentle stroll away from Mount Lavinia Hotel and
about 10kms from Colombo city. It is a charming
world of stone floors, sumptious sofas and four-poster
beds, with bright light shining in from several
charming stone-walled courtyard gardens. Why not
book your own floor -- or get some friends together
and book out the whole place?

Lavinia Hotel, Mount Lavinia |
|
 |
The
Mount Lavinia Hotel, once the sprawling mansion
of a British governor general, is prized by those
who like their "old colonial’’
on the formal side. Colombo’s only true beach
hotel – it has its own private beach -- lies
in its quiet southern outskirts, in Mount Lavinia,
and increasingly offers modern facilities alongside
its undoubted charm. |

Grand |

 |
A
predictable city 5-star? Well, perhaps, although
Cinnamon Grand's ambitious atrium design has always
given it a sense of grandeur lacking in other Colombo
5-stars. And since its previous guise as The Oberoi,
this is definitely a hotel on the up. New owners
have added a new wing, several fine restaurants,
and an atmospheric poolside bar. It also adjoins
an upmarket shopping mall. |

Face Regency, Colombo |
|
 |
Galle
Face Regency is the new Regency wing of Galle Face
Hotel, and will only enhance its reputation for
a contemporary colonial feel. It incorporates the
traditional Victorian features so successfully that
already it blends seamlessly with the older part
of the hotel. Its stately wooden panelling and floors,
and staunchly Victorian rooms, are immediately resonant
of a bygone age. |

| Ceylon
Continental, Colombo |
|
 |
Sri
Lanka is famed for its geniality, and the Ceylon
Continental exemplifies it. Its warm welcome is
striking for a 5-star city centre hotel –
and that matters. Restaurants are passable; value
for money outstanding. Great pool deck and quality
tennis and squash courts. |

| Indra Regent, Colombo |
|
 |
The
Indra Regent is a simple two-star hotel of modest
ambitions. But for an England cricket tourist on
an unashamedly tight budget it has much to commend
it. When we road-tested it, we thought the showers
and the a/c unit were the best of several budget
choices. It is on the right side of town, missing
the rush-hour en route to the SSC, and is also a
short stroll from Cricket Club Cafe, several restaurants
and bars, and the casinos. It also has its own pool
parlour and a karaoke club with an interesting clientele.
We are holding the only five rooms with windows!
There is no more to be said really -- so there is
no long profile. But share a twin room and it's
£12 a head. You can't argue with that. |
