Sri Lanka’s relatively unspoiled seas hold an abundance
of game fish. Species of Marlin, Sail Fish, Wahoo, Spanish
mackerel, Giant Trevallie, Benito, Queen Fish (the world record
is held in Sri Lanka), Barracuda, Grouper, Cobia and Tuna
make this tropical paradise superb deep sea fishing territory.
Deep sea angling is the most popular form of recreational
and sport fishing in Sri Lanka.
There are a wide variety of locations off the south and west
coasts.
At Aluthgama, about two hours south of Colombo, boats head
out early in the morning for five-hour sessions chasing grouper,
parrot fish and blue and yellow fin tuna (up to 6ft). Dolphin,
swordfish and marlin reach a size to challenge the best big
game fishermen. The broadbill swordfish found in deeper waters
reach 15ft and well over 1,000lb.
Deep sea fishing off the east coast is less developed and
at this stage Red Dot is unable to recommend an operator for
deep sea fishing. The sport is also complicated by naval restrictions.
However, the Sri Lanka government is keen to develop water
sports in the Trincomalee area. We are actively seeking out
operators and hope to be able to offer this soon.
Package details:
Currently deep sea fishing is most easily arranged from Mt.
Lavinia, Aluthgama and Kalpitiya. However, other destinations
further south are available on demand. A typical day packages
includes about five hours out at sea, usually starting at
the crack of dawn although afternoon trips can also be arranged.
The fiberglass fishing trawlers used are safe but not as luxurious
as in some parts of the world. The cost of the day trip includes
the hire of the boat and a professional guide. Equipment can
be hired.
