Golf in Sri Lanka

The fun filled and highly competitive annual tournament of the Donald Steel Trophy takes place at the Victoria Golf & Country Resort on the weekend of February 9th & 10th 2008. A much looked forward to event in the Sri Lanka Golf Calendar, this amateur golf tournament attracts over 100 players from about 15 countries including golfers from the UK, Canada and New Zealand and ensures the highest levels of sportsmanship.

The inaugural tournament of the Donald Steel Trophy was played in 1999 with the opening of the Victoria Golf & Country Club. Since then this event has become an annual fixture and includes the Ebert Pot, The Pam Fernando Trophy, and the Victoria Bowl, with the last two events being for ladies. The February 2008 tournament is open to all golfers with a recognized handicap. The Gentlemen’s Division consists of 36 holes of stableford golf for the Donald Steel Trophy (gross Division) and the Ebert Pot (Net Division). The Ladies Division consists of 36 holes of stableford golf for the Pam Fernando Cup (Gross Division) and the Victoria Bowl (Net Division). Competition prizes are also awarded for `nearest the pin’ and the `longest drive’. In addition 3 Gentleman's’ Division prizes and 2 Ladies Division prizes are awarded. A fun filled mid tournament party is organized by the Victoria Golf Club where participants can relax and enjoy prior to the final days heated competition.

The Victoria golf course designed by Donald Steel, is set in the spectacular Kandyan hill country, a short distance from the historic city of Kandy and has won many accolades over the years including ‘Best Course in the Subcontinent’ – Asia Golf monthly and ranked in ‘Top 100 Most Beautiful courses in the World,’ by Golfers Digest.
