Aquaserene, Kollam |
Aquaserene
has an unusual but impressive location. Its traditional-style
cottages, many of which have direct lake views, have relatively
basic interiors. They are spacious and clean but the interior
décor is not inspiring. However, the wide balconies
are splendid and the open-air bathrooms are excellent. |

Estuary Island
is a unique new hotel property offering guests a taste
of the backwaters and Kerala's palm-fringed beaches. Only
opened in 2005, the main building, tastefully designed,
overlooks a long garden, across a lake, towards a long
wide sand bar and the ocean about 500m in the distance. |

Hotel Samudra
offers good-value in an overpriced market. The rooms are
not chic or stylish but they are clean and functional.
There is a large pool and expansive gardens with lovely
neatly clipped lawns. Guests seek out the shade of coconut
palms and lounge through the days. |

Coconut Bay
is an excellent elevated 3-acre wooded garden that has
only 21 independent villas, all of which therefore have
sea views and their own verandas on which to sit back
and relax. The property offers excellent three-star standard
accommodation in a very beautiful location. |

Silver Crest
is the best simple, low-budget option in Thekkady. The
rooms are basic but comfortable and spotlessly clean.
There is a small swimming pool and a neatly clipped lawn.
Red Dot recommends it for those needing to trim their
budgets. |

a comfortable three-star property offering fine views

Fort Heritage, Kochi |
Fort Heritage
is basic, good-value 12-bedroom hotel with an old-world
feel and a slightly brooding atmosphere. It is not luxurious
- not even the three two-roomed suites can reasonably
claim to be that - but it has some soul having been reconverted
from a 17th Century Dutch mansion. |

Gokulam Park Inn, Kochi |
Gokulam Park
Inn is a typical mid-range Indian business hotel - spotlessly
clean, thoroughly efficient and rather garishly furnished.
It offers excellent value for those needing to stay closer
to the new town. There is also a decent lounge bar downstairs
leading off the shiny, marble-floored lobby. |
