You WILL need a visa for India. All foreign nationals, including children, require a visa to enter India. You can book your holiday and pay a deposit while making enquiries, Please do not finalise your travel arrangements to India before ascertaining your visa requirements. Contact the Indian High Commission or visit the India Visa Application Centre, officially appointed by the Indian High Commission to handle visa requests. They can be found at http://in.vfsglobal.co.uk.
In all cases, it is advisable to have six months left on your
passport at time of travel.
The visa form may ask you for two references in India. If you
