Horton Plains, a high and isolated grassland, was made
a national park in 1988. This bleak plateau harbours a
variety of wild animals, hill birds and butterflies, but
it is for its sheer wildness that it can most appeal.
The plains can be explored by jeep, preferably from early
morning as the mist often falls by lunchtime.
World’s End is the most popular trek, an undulating
5km bridle path taking you to a precipice with a 1,050m
drop, where the rising of early-morning mist can produce
a spectacular sight.
