Most of Sri Lanka’s finest waterfalls can be accessed
by foot, and have small observation areas and vendors
selling a few souvenirs and refreshments.
Dunhinda Falls, the largest in Sri Lanka lie north of
Badulla, and gain their name from “dunhind”
– misty haze. They can be accessed from a steep,
rough path from the roadside.
Rawana Ella Falls lie south of Ella on the scenic A23.
Haputale is the closest town to Diyaluma Falls, less spectacular
than Dunhinda, but quite peaceful as long as the monkeys
are not too skittish!
The scenic route from Hatton to Nana Oya boasts great
views of Devon and St Calir Falls, which are most easily
enjoyed from a roadside tea shop.
As well as waterfalls, the highlands house some excellent
caves.
