A capital city offering wonderful
value |
There has rarely been a better time to visit Colombo,
as the Sri Lankan capital bursts with renewed vigour and
optimism.
The ceasefire between the Sri Lankan government and the
LTTE have encouraged expectations of a brighter future
and the benefits are already apparent in a capital determined
to shake off its once dowdy image.
New bars and restaurants are spring up, the nightclubs
are fuller than they have been for years and Colombo's
thriving clothing industry makes it an increasingly appealing
shopping destination.
All with the year-round sunshine and genial air –
strikingly laid back for a capital city -- that helps
to relax even the most stressed-out traveller.
Yet despite the new mood, prices remain highly attractive.
Where else can you enjoy the facilities of a five-star
hotel for as little as £40 a night?
Colombo lies only 50 minutes south of the international
airport. It can be a convenient resting point at the start
or the end of an island tour, a great stopover destination
en route to India or the Maldives or a holiday in itself.
It is a capital city with the mood of a large town, easily
explored and retaining a relaxed and welcoming feel rare
in urban areas. It should not be lightly ignored.
Increasing inward investment gives Colombo a unique opportunity
- the chance to modernise without making the mistakes
of many of its larger Asian rivals, the opportunity to
blend its old-time appeal with renewed growth.
Red Dot's specialist involvement in cricket tours has
long encouraged us to fight Colombo's corner. Cricket
teams from all over the world kept faith with Colombo,
even at the height of the troubles, while the large travel
companies turned their back.
Our Colombo guide keeps Red Dot's clients informed about
the latest developments.
