Sri Lanka's coastline has few rivals. It is blessed with temperatures
consistently around 30C and has avoided much of the chaotic
development that has blighted so many holiday regions. Watersports
are common on many beaches and tiny restaurants and beach bars
abound.
Peak season on the west and south coast runs from November to
mid-April, although August and September are also popular. The
monsoon season traditionally only seriously affects the west
and south coast in May and June, with another wet period in
October - although even the rain often falls at night and there
are some excellent deals available.
For outstanding natural scenery, Sri Lanka has few equals. Kandy,
the hill country capital, is the gateway to an invigorating
land studded by tea estates and paddy fields. Around Nuwara
Eliya, the mountain passes and the isolated plateau of Horton
Plains, are spectacular.
Sri Lanka possessed a cultured civilisation five centuries before
Christ and the ruined cities of Polonnuruwa and Anuradhapura,
and the rock fortress of Sigiriya remain marvellously-preserved
monuments to a bygone age.
Add game parks, teeming bird life, expertise in ayurvedic medicine
and some of the finest walking country around, and Sri Lanka
