Polonnaruva
Day 1/2/3: Cultural Triangle

Sri Lanka's famous cultural triangle offers plenty to fire both mind and body over the next two days. The ruined capital of Polonnaruwa, the lion rock of Mount Sigiriya and Dambulla temple are all included in your package. You will also have fun choosing from some excellent hotels, all conveniently placed for your trail back into history.

Note: The Mini island Hop does not normally go to Anaradhapura, but you can go there on request.

Day 4/5: Kandy

The journey from the cultural triangle to Sri Lanka's hill capital - the small lakeside city of Kandy - will occupy most of the morning. In the afternoon, a city tour includes such delights as the fabulous botanical gardens and the Temple of the Tooth, which is said to hold a holy relic of the Lord Buddha.
The second day includes several optional trips, including a visit to Pinnewela Elephant Orphanage, or the chance to play golf in the hill-country splendour of Victoria Golf Club

Day 5: Do you want any of these Kandy excursions to be included in your package?

Golf at Victoria Golf Club.
Boat trip down Mahaweli River.
Excursion to Pinnewela elephant orphanage.
Walk in Hunas Giriyas mountains.
Time for a quiet day. No excursions please.

Day 6/7: Nuwara Eliya and Highlands

The morning journey upwards to Nuwara Eliya, an ever-popular one-time British colonial hill station in the heart of the tea plantations, takes you through some spectacular hill-country scenery.

You can stay either in Nuwara Eliya itself, or strike out further south to the less touristy Southern Highlands, and explore an inspiring land of caves and waterfalls.

Day 7 options: You can consider these options:

Explore Horton Plains, the only national park in Sri Lanka where walking is allowed. You may see sambur deer (more than 3000 live on Horton Plains), and monkeys, squirrels, wild cats and wild boar. Sample the famous view at 'World's End' where the escarpment drops 3000 feet to the 'Nagrak' tea estate below.

Journey to the coast via Uda Walawe game park. In this case you will only spend one night in the Highlands and will pass your second night in the simple two-star Centauria Hotel, alongside the park.

(Note: Yala game park is not an option on the Mini Island tour).

Time for a quiet day. No excursions please.

Day 8 onwards: Sri Lankan beaches (minimum 2 nights):

Beach days, pure and simple. Spend a minimum of two nights and an unlimited maximum number of nights – subject only to your visa or money running out!
Chose from our wide range of south and west coast beach hotels, or even in the luxury of a Galle hotel or villa, where the beaches are close by.

On the West coast, the sands are longer and broader, the hotels cover all ranges from luxury to budget, and there is more of a package-holiday feel.

In the South, the sandy coves are smaller and quieter, and accommodation tends to be smaller, simpler and more intimate.

Final night:

Red Dot recommends that you spend your last day in close proximity to the airport. It tries to ensure that you don't reach the arrivals hall all hot and bothered before a long flight home.

We recommend a last night in Colombo, at the excellent-value Ceylon Continental. But a large selection of Colombo hotels are available, as are possible options at Mount Lavinia (Colombo's own beach resort), Airport hotels and the beach resort of Negombo.

Average airport journey times:

* Airport hotels: 5-15 mins.
* Negombo: 15-25 mins.
* Colombo: 45-60 mins.
* Mount Lavinia: 60-95 mins.
