The Maldives is unique in having a territory that consists
of only 0.04% land. Luckily the other 99.6% is seemingly
endless water that varies in colour from, almost obscene,
neon azures to deep languid cobalt. Boats naturally lend
themselves to a country so watery and many a holiday in
the Maldives starts with a speedboat trip from the capital
Malé to resorts in atolls nearby.
A serene trip over crystal-clear water to a remote, unseen
island paradise is not really a bad way to start a holiday
and visitors to the Maldives often count their first over-water
trip a highlight of their stay. Many of the boats used
are traditional Maldivian dhonis converted with a diesel
engine, also bigger boats called vedis are used to get
to more distant atolls.
