Island hopping: In order to experience the Maldivian culture and get to know the way of life of its people, we recommend visiting an inhabited island nearby your island resort. Life on these islands is very different to the resort islands and it is an experience not to be missed. Arts & crafts made by the local communities are available for purchase and shopping here will ensure the money goes directly to the local community.
Visiting Malé: Malé is the capital of the Republic of Maldives and is built on an island which is just four sq kms. Over one third of the 300,000 population of Maldives live in Malé. Very unlike the resort islands where life is laid back and unhurried, Malé is a busy modern city dominated by high-rise buildings, paved roadways, shops, cultural sites, and cafes. Visit Malé to get to know the people of Maldives, their cultural heritage and sumptuous local cuisine.
Fishing: Fishing is the main income-generating activity for the Maldivian people. It is also a popular pastime. Night fishing and morning fishing is possible here. In the case of night fishing, the boat leaves the island and anchors at a reef before dark. Morning fishing or big game fishing involves trolling outside the atolls further into the deep seas. Almost all the island resorts offer various forms of fishing including big game fishing, sunrise and sunset fishing, line trawling, spin fishing and are well equipped for these activities. Fishing enthusiasts may still prefer to bring their own equipment.
Whales & Dolphin Watching: Maldives ranks among the top five places on Earth for watching whales and dolphins. Most of the resorts organise whale watching excursions during the season. The whale species found here include the blue whale and sperm whale. Dolphins are a common site in the Maldives and can be seen in large pods swimming close to the reef and swimming alongside speedboats. The species found here include the bottle nosed and spinner dolphins.
Cruises: Explore the Indian Ocean waters aboard a dhoni or a private yacht at sunset when the views are breathtaking. Most of the island resorts offer sunset cruises and even cocktails and a romantic candlelit dinner aboard a yacht while cruising the waters. Some of the super-luxury boutique resorts have their own yachts that are fully equipped with accommodation and even spas on board.
Castaway experience: Spend a morning castaway on a deserted coral island where you can snorkel in the surrounding turquoise waters followed by a picnic lunch arranged by your resort.
