Serenity is a six-bedroomed plantation bungalow on a rubber estate between the Malabar Coast and the spice-growing Thekkady hills. The 130 km drive from Cochin International Airport takes about three hours. Thekkady and Periyar are 80 kms away. Serenity is the perfect place to break journey between Thekkady and the backwater areas of Kumarakom and Alleppey.
Introduction
Serenity, a refurbished 1920s plantation mansion, is set on a small hilltop on the Kanam Rubber Estate and has views of the Western Ghats at a distance. Owned by Malabar Escapes, which runs several exquisite boutique hotels and villas in Kerala, this refurbished colonial mansion is immersed in tropical greenery. The old mansion has been caringly refurbished, retaining its original architecture including dark wood panelling. The interiors are tastefully blended with vibrant colours, period furniture, antique object d’art and are equipped with modern conveniences. True to its name, Serenity is perfect for quiet relaxation and contemplation. Relax in a garden hammock under the shade of a tall tropical tree, learn to cook sumptuous Kerala rice and curries or venture off on an adventurous tour of the surrounding villages on the back of Lakshmi – Serenity’s own resident elephant. The property can be hired as an entire villa or by the room.

Accommodation
There six tastefully-designed double rooms of which two are on the ground floor and four on the first floor. Some of the rooms are equipped with a/c and all have ceiling fans. The ensuite bathrooms have h/w showers. All rooms are spacious with interiors highlighted in vibrant colours creating an exotic ambience. The ground floor rooms have polished stone floors while the first floor rooms have wooden flooring. All rooms have private verandahs, IDD telephone, and internet facilities. Some bedrooms on the ground floor have easy access for wheelchairs. Room numbers 3, 4 and 5 have hilltop views across the tropical landscape and the mountains beyond.
Facilities
The Malabar Escapes properties are well known for their sumptuous fusion cuisine. At Serenity, traditional Indian cuisine and Mediterranean cuisine is served prepared with fresh herbs and vegetables grown on their own estate. Meals are served in the privacy of your own verandah, by the swimming pool or in the dining room. The chef is ever willing to share his recipes with guests wishing to learn traditional Keralan cuisine. A spacious sitting room on the ground floor is equipped with a TV, DVD, in-house DVD library, record player with an inherited old collection of record music, email and internet facility. Extensive gardens are scattered with fruit trees that attract plenty of birds. There is a swimming pool and badminton court. Mountain bikes are available for guests to use. The Ayurvedic Spa with one large treatment room offers a range of rejuvenating massages. Seven to 15-day Ayurvedic therapies are on offer for medical conditions such as rheumatism, arthritis, back pain, headaches, stress related disorders, and weight loss.
Excursions
Kanam estate and the surrounding areas are fertile lands that grow numerous crops including aromatic spices such as pepper, cardamom and cloves; cocoa, coffee and tea; numerous varieties of fruit; and rubber. Serenity arranges guided walks through the surrounding plantations where you can learn how these precious crops are grown and processed. Explore the surrounding rural villages in a bullock cart or on elephant back. Classical dance performances including Kathakali can be seen at the Aranmula Cultural Centre situated nearby. Visit Kottayam with its 16C churches including Cheria Palli and Valla Palli.
