Hotel Samudra, Kovalam South India

Hotel Samudra, Kovalam
Price Guide: £
Location
Hotel Samudra, another property run by the impressive Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC), is located in Kovalam, Kerala's most popular beach resort, only 18 kms south of Trivandrum. Along with the beaches of Goa and Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu, Kovalam forms a trio of South India's most sought-after tropical beaches. Hotel Samudra, has the advantage of an excellent headland location overlooking one of Kovalam's largest bays and is therefore blessed with a great deal of privacy. The drive from Trivandrum International Airport will take about 30 minutes.
Introduction
Hotel Samudra offers good-value rooms which might not be chic or stylish, but which are clean and functional. There is a large pool and expansive gardens with neatly-clipped lawns. Guests can make use of the easy access to the beach (best between November and March) or else seek out the shade of coconut palms. In short, this is a no-frills, well-run, decent-value, friendly beach hotel. You won't be blown away by the architecture or décor, but if some of the plusher boutique-style properties further south are out of your price budget, this is well worth considering.

Accommodation
The hotel has 62 deluxe rooms with sea-facing balconies and two suites that have direct sea views (even from the bath-tub if you peer past the shower curtain!). Other in-room facilities include satellite TV, 24 hour room service and laundry service.
Facilities
The main restaurant serves traditional Kerala cuisine and some international dishes. There is also a coffee shop serving light snacks, a beer parlour, and a poolside bar. The swimming pool is set amidst tropical gardens and there is also a reserved beach area for hotel guests. The Ayurvedic centre offers relaxing herbal massages.
Excursions
Relax on Kovalam beach with its white sandy beaches. Experience the backwaters of Kerala located just 7 kms away where guests are taken on a cruise in a traditional boat. Fisherman tending to their Chinese fishing nets, Cormorants and Brahmini Kites diving down into the waters in search of their catch, rural women working at the coir mills, and the chatter of waving children as your boat passes by – all sights and sounds of the backwaters not to be missed. Explore Kerala’s capital city – Trivandrum with it ancient Hindu temples, art galleries and museums. Visit Varkala with white-sanded beaches backed by dramatic red laterite cliffs. Varkala has steadily grown in popularity in recent years, especially amongst those who find Kovalam too developed for their liking. The wide and long beach here is good during the season from October to mid-March and relatively peaceful in comparison to Kovalam, although there are hawkers. Varkala is also an important Hindu pilgrimage area.
