Malabar Spice Trail
Introduction
The aroma of cinnamon, cardamom and cloves permeates through the foothills of the Western Ghats. This is Kerala’s spice country. For centuries, ships from ancient Rome, China, Arabia, Persia and Europe were attracted to the shores of the Malabar Coast in search of these precious spices. Today, Kerala is a colourful mix of world cultures, all of which have left an indelible impression on its landscape and lifestyles and boasts the richest and most varied forms of cuisine in India. You can experience Ayuerveda cuisine, traditional Sadya curry served on a banana leaf, Syrian-Christian home cooking on a homestay and fusion cuisine in Fort Cochin. Over the centuries, the region’s many Hindu castes, religious minorities, traders and colonial powers have added their own sumptuous twist and delicacies to the traditional rice and curry meal. The Malabar Spice Trail is a tantalising experience of the flavours of Kerala beginning from the historic Fort Cochin to the tea hills of Munnar, spice plantations of the Western Ghats, tranquil backwaters and ending on the shores of the Arabian Sea in the South West. We are always ready to tinker with this itinerary if you wish and add an extra night here and there. We can also discuss other hotels options.
