Tea County, Munnar

Location
Tea County, one of the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation's (KTDC) excellent hotels, is situated in Munnar at the foothills of Anamudi, the highest peak in the South of India. Perched 1600m above sea-level in the upper reaches of the Western Ghats, Munnar is a tea-growing hill station which was a favoured summer retreat for the British during colonial times. Munnar is located 130 kms from Cochin International Airport, a scenic drive that takes about four hours; 162 km from Madurai Airport; and 100 kms from Thekkady which is about a three hour journey.
Introduction
Government-run hotels normally conjure up images of tasteless décor and grumpy service, and this makes Tea County a revelation. It is a spotless and well-managed hotel with a beautiful setting spread across eight acres of tea and landscaped gardens. The rooms are spacious, the décor is smart, the Kerala cuisine is tasty, and the rates reasonable in comparison to some of its over-priced competitors. Tea County takes pride in their rose gardens and the resident horticulturist will spend much time with you explaining the numerous varieties. There is even an unusually named Ayurvedic centre, Age Halt, which purports to use amazing powers of rejuvenation. Unfortunately, our Red Dot representative was unable to test out the validity of these claims so we can offer no guarantees.

Accommodation
The hotel has 43 spacious bedrooms set within nine plantation style cottages. Rooms are divided into three types: Standard, Deluxe and Suite. The Deluxe Rooms and Suites are more spacious and have a dressing area. The ensuite bathrooms have h/w showers. Each room has its own balcony or terrace with picturesque views of the surrounding tea estate and the mountains beyond. In-room facilities include satellite TV, coffee / tea making facilities, electric heaters for cooler days, and 24 hour room service and laundry service.
Facilities
There is a multi-cuisine restaurant (which even has a dance floor), a coffee shop, beer and wine parlour with a fireplace. The Ayurvedic wellness centre is supervised by a physician offering relaxing massages and more intensive curative treatments that can take up to two weeks. There is also a gym, doctor-on-call, conference facilities, and indoor games room for wet days that includes a full-size snooker table.
Excursions
Tea County organises adventure sports including paragliding and mountaineering. Visit Chithirapuram Tea Plantations and Mattupetty Dam. There are plenty of good trekking options nearby, including Anamudi Peak, at 2695m above sea level the highest mountain south of the Himalayas. Explore the wilds of Chinnaur sanctuary home to most of the Southern Indian wild animals including elephants, the grizzled giant squirrel, champal squirrel, sambar, and numerous species of birds. Experience traditional dance including Kathakali, tribal dance performances and the ancient martial art form of Kalaripayattu at the Kerala Arts & Cultural Centre in Munnar.
