Birds Lagoon is a tranquil eco-retreat perched at the edge of the Periyar River overlooking the Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary. Spread over six acres of lush green vegetation that attracts numerous species of exotic birds, this is an ideal retreat for nature lovers. Birds Lagoon is conveniently situated enroute from Munnar to Cochin. The international airport in Cochin is located 45 kms from here.
Introduction
Relax and contemplate on the verandah of a heritage-style cottage perched on the banks of the lotu-filled river, go bird watching, bamboo rafting or explore the nearby rural village. Birds Lagoon offers comfortable accommodation, tasty Kerala cuisine and an eco-friendly environment.

Accommodation
There are a/c and non-a/c rooms and 12 heritage-style cottages. Red Dot recommends the cottages which has private verandahs opening out to the tranquil lake. The rooms are well furnished with double or twin beds fitted with mosquito netting. Rooms are equipped with overhead fans, satellite TV, telephone, and mini-fridge. Attached toilets have h/w showers. There is 24-hour room service and laundry service.
Facilities
The open-sided restaurant overlooks the river. Kerala rice and curries, other Indian delicacies and some western dishes are served here. There is an Ayurveda centre offering relaxing massages, doctor on call, swimming pool, children’s play area, badminton, indoor games, and a range of activities including mountain biking, fishing, boating, bamboo rafting, bird watching, and trekking.
Excursions
Explore the Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary. It was officially formed in 1983 but 50 years earlier Dr Salim Ali, India’s most famous birder, described Thattekkad as the "richest bird habitat in peninsular India". Unfortunately, much of the forest has now been converted to commercial use but the 25 sq km park still boasts 270 species, including the rare Spot-bellied Eagle Owl, Ceylon frog-moth, Rose billed roller, Grey-headed Bulbul, Rusty-tailed Flycatcher, Mottled Wood Owl, and the Malabar grey-hornbill. Visit the nearby Kodanad Elephant Kraal which is an elephant rescue centre for stranded baby elephants from the forest regions across Kerala. Visit a tribal village of the indigenous Mannan community and learn of their rituals and lifestyles.
