Price Guide: ££
Location
Old Harbour is a refurbished boutique hotel steeped in history, located within Cochin Fort. Once the favourite abode of sea-fearers this 300-year-old heritage property is a peaceful retreat within the heart of Fort Cochin. The Fort is situated 45 kms from Cochin’s International Airport and the journey will take up to 90 minutes.
Introduction
Originally known as the Old Harbour House, this ancient Dutch-period mansion was the very first hotel in Fort Cochin. It was renovated by architect Karl Damschen, a specialist in restoration of ancient buildings who also did the renovation of the hotel Brunton Boatyard, also located in Fort Cochin. Old Harbour’s original façade, arches, high roofs, timber flooring and wooden ceilings have all been retained. Today’s Old Harbour Hotel is a unique blend of colonial design, stylish interiors with modern comforts and ethnic Indian ambience.

Accommodation
There are 13 a/c ensuite bedrooms, each named after the old streets of Fort Cochin. Spacious and airy, the rooms open out to the gardens or views of the Vasco da Gama square at a distance where Chinese fishing nets are lined up by the Vembanad Lake. The rooms are spacious and are furnished with large antique beds dressed in fine white linen. There are also two Garden Cottages with more ethnic interiors and private verandah opening out to the gardens. All bathrooms are provided with organic soaps and lotions, bath robes and slippers.
Facilities
The lush tropical gardens are peaceful and well laid out with a central swimming pool and open-air stage where traditional dance and music performances are held. International, Indian and Kerala cuisine is served at the restaurant. Fresh fish is bought directly from the fisherman at the Chinese nets and only organically grown vegetables are used to prepare the meals. Indulge in a relaxing Ayurvedic massage at Old Harbour’s spa.
Excursions
Experience Fort Cochin’s cultural and architectural heritage. Visit the Mattancherry Palace, once occupied by the local Verma Kings and now a museum. Verma Kings of Malabar were tolerant of other faiths including the Jewish and Syrian Christians that arrived on this coast in the 15C. Explore the Jewish Town with its narrow cobbled stone walkways where wayside shops overflow with antiques, silk shawls and Kurtas. The beautiful 16C synagogue with intricate chandeliers and porcelain tiled floors stands in a corner of Jewish Town. The Santa Cruz Basilica built by the Portuguese in the 17th century, the Dutch Palace and the St. Francis Church are all well worth a visit. Stroll down to the Vasco da Gama square, a narrow promenade that parallels the beach where huge Chinese fishing nets are tended by fisherman. Traditional Kathakali and Bharathanatyam dance performances are held at the Greenix Village down Kalvathy Road.
