Location
Grand Residencia is a newly refurbished heritage hotel within Fort Cochin, which is linked to the history of Koder House situated just next door. Located on Princess Street and 50 metres away from the waters of the Arabian Sea, Grand Residencia is convenient base from which to explore Fort Cochin. Cochin’s International Airport is 42 kms away and the drive will take upto 90 minutes depending on traffic.
Introduction
Grand Residencia is located next door to the Koder House and originally housed the offices and staff quarters of the Koder family, one of Kerala’s most influential Cochin Jewish families. Dating back to the 19th century, these two buildings are connected by an ornate hanging bridge which still remains but no longer provides through access. Grand Residencia is now owned by Abad Hotels and Resorts which refurbished this Colonial period property and opened it as a 21 roomed hotel in 2007. The Portuguese architectural feature of arches, high roofs, verandahs and courtyard still remain. White washed walls, green edged doors and windows, and terracotta flooring makes this a light and airy hotel that mixes modern living with old-world charm.

Excursions
Explore the Jewish Town with its narrow cobbled stone walkways where wayside shops overflow with antiques, silk shawls and Kurtas. The beautiful 16th century Synagogue with intricate chandeliers and porcelain tiled floors stands in a corner of Jewish Town. The Santa Cruz Basilica built by the Portuguese in the 17th century, the Dutch Palace and the St. Francis Church are all well worth a visit. Visit the Mattancherry Palace – once occupied by the local Verma Kings and now a museum that tells of their lifestyle. Verma Kings of Malabar were reputed to be highly tolerant and lived side by side with those of other faiths including the Jewish and Syrian Christians that arrived on this coast in the 15th century. Stroll down to the Vasco da Gama square – a narrow promenade that parallels the beach where huge Chinese fishing nets are carefully tended by fisherman. These large contraptions built out of teak wood and bamboo poles, almost in the shape of a preying-mantis date back to the 14th century and are a familiar sight along the backwaters of Kumarakom and Cochin.
