Windermere Estate is set amidst a 60-acre Cardamom plantation which merges seamlessly with the surrounding tea covered hills of Munnar and the lush green forests of the Western Ghats. Munnar, a tea-growing hill station town situated at the confluence of three mountain streams, was a favoured summer retreat for the British during Colonial times. The journey from Cochin International Airport is 95 kms and will take about 2.5 hours. From Thekkady, situated 100 kms away, the journey will take up to 4 hours.
Introduction
Windermere Estate is run by an Indian family that has owned this property for generations and still lmanages the 60-acre Cardamom, coffee and tea plantation as well as the holiday retreat. The bedrooms and restaurant is a charming blend of ethnic Indian touches and English country feel. Life on Windemere Estate is unhurried. Wake up to bird song and spectacular mountain views; dine on authentic Malayali cuisine prepared according to age old family recipes using fresh herbs and aromatic spices; relax under a tree with a good book or explore the estate with its natural springs, lush vegetation and exotic species of birds. Windermere Estate is very much a home away from home with the owners at hand to ensure that you have a perfect holiday.

Accommodation
There are 10 ensuite bedrooms of which four are Valley View Rooms situated in a separate plantation home with views overlooking the Chithirapuram Valley below. The living space is shared by all four rooms. Six luxurious Cottage Rooms, each with a private balcony over looking the Cardamom plantation and the mountains beyond, is located separately. These ensuite rooms are spacious and are furnished with king sized beds, work desk and lounging area. The ensuite bathrooms have h/w showers.
Facilities
Dine at the Barn – a wonderful restaurant built with solid timber and opening out to the flowering gardens. Traditional Kerala cuisine and continental dishes are served here. After your meal, relax by the fireplace or move upstairs into the peaceful and expansive library with numerous titles on nature, wildlife and the cultural heritage of Kerala. A more adventurous and rustic dining experience including BBQs, is offered outdoors in the Boulder Garden, under the shade of a large boulder set amidst tall tropical trees. The Hut, built along the lines of an open sided traditional Kerala tribal home with thatched roof, serves up snacks and fresh fruit juices.
Excursions
Surrounded by Cardamom, coffee, tea and tropical forests, there is plenty to explore just within Windermere Estate. Go on a conducted `Cardamom Walk’ and learn of this valuable crop that has attracted traders from the world over to this region for centuries. Surrounded by the Western Ghats, mountain trekking is rewarding here. Trekking can include a short trek into the rural countryside or a challenging mountain climb. Visit Eravikulam National Park situated about 19km away, to see the Nilgiri Tahr, a rare species of mountain goat. The Chinnaur Wildlife Sanctuary is further afield, 60km away, but also well-worth a visit. Mattupetty Dam is 13km and offers some wonderful boating opportunities.
