Location
Set on atop a 120ft. cliff surrounded by nine acres of lush greenery and the Arabian Sea lapping at the bottom of the cliff, The Travancore is a heritage hotel that unfolds within a 150 year old Chettinand Palace surrounded by age old Kerala cottages where time stands still and guests experience traditional hospitality at its best. For those wishing to be closer to the sea, the modern new wing – Beach Grove with its own swimming pool and beachside restaurant will appeal. Travancore Heritage is located in Kovalam, a small fishing village with a golden strip of beach just 16 km south of Kerala’s capital city Trivandrum. The journey from the International airport is about 30 minutes.
Introduction
The Travancore Heritage is one of Red Dot's favourite beach properties in Kerala, offering high-end accommodation in individual Kerala heritage cottages. These beautifully reconstructed timber village houses complete with wood carvings and timber roofs, were originally built about 80 to 100 years ago before being painstakingly transplanted to their new location. The interiors of the cottages are furnished with antiques. Relax on a typical Kerala swing in your own private verandah amidst coconut trees and flowering gardens. While most rooms have views of the distant sea, there is a new block of good-value rooms at the 'The Beach Grove' which sits at the bottom of the 120ft. cliff (don't worry, there is an efficient lift!). This area offers easier access to the Kovalam beach with safe swimming during the season from November to April. The Anandam Ayurveda Centre is well known for its relaxing and curative therapies supervised by an in-house Ayurvedic physician.

Facilities
The main reception building, which is a 150-year-old Chettinand palace, has a guest activity centre on the first floor with a small library, indoor games and an Internet kiosk. Dine at the Open House – the main restaurant with carved stone pillars and decorated timber roof, overlooking the pool. Sumptuous Kerala cuisine is served here as well as a range of western dishes. The Ocean Grill located in the Beach Grove serves exotic seafood specialties. There is also an Ayurveda restaurant that serves vegetarian meals that complements the Ayurveda therapies offered at the Anandam Ayurveda Centre. There is a 228sq/m swimming pool with a specially designated children's area as well as a set of Jacuzzis just by the main building. Traditional performances including music, Bharathanatyam and Kathakali dance performances are held regularly by the poolside. Travancore Heritage is well known for its Ayurveda Centre which has eight treatment rooms an offers traditional relaxing and curative therapies closely supervised by an experienced Ayurvedic physician. The curative therapies require a minimum of 14 nights stay in order to make a lifestyle difference. Several recreational activities are offered by the beachside especially during the season when the stretch of beach in front of the Beach Grove extends almost 7 kms.
Excursions
Experience the backwaters of Kerala located just 7 kms away where guests are taken on a cruise in a traditional boat. Fisherman tending to their Chinese fishing nets, Cormorants and Brahmini Kites diving down into the waters in search of their catch, rural women working at the coir mills, and the chatter of waving children as your boat passes by – all sights and sounds of the backwaters not to be missed. For those interested in traditional arts and heritage, visit the Napier Museum and the Sree Chithra Art Gallery located in the city of Trivandrum about 15 kms away.
