Location
Situated on Poovar Island surrounded by an estuary where the Poovar River meets the Arabian Sea, this is a mid-ranged island resort set on a 25 acre tranquil coconut grove. Floating cottages on the charming backwaters with the Arabian Sea at a distance is ideal for a romantic escape. The resort can be accessed via a 15 minute boat ride along the tranquil backwaters. Poovar is a short drive south of Kovalam and is about 32km south of Trivandrum airport.
Introduction
Jointly managed by local owners and Aitken Spence Hotels of Sri Lanka, this is a mid-ranged eco-friendly island resort set amidst lush tropical gardens and waterways. Guests can choose to stay in the floating cottages on the Poovar River or inland in individual cottages amidst landscaped gardens. The Ayurveda Centre here attracts many long stay guests undergoing curative treatments for numerous medical problems as well as those wanting to relax and destress.

Accommodation
There are 54 land cottages designed according to traditional Kerala architecture with private verandahs. These airconditioned heritage cottages are furnished with twin or double beds, satellite TV, and mini-bar. The attached bathrooms have h/w showers. There are also 16 airconditioned floating cottages on the estuary overlooking the backwaters and the Arabian Sea. The interiors have wood paneling making it cozy and comfortable with a bedroom, living area, ensuite bathroom and private balcony. There are two special eco-friendly floating cottages with solar powered hot water and curtains made of medicinal plants. These two cottages are non-airconditioned with ample breeze flowing through to keep cool. All floating cottages are built with coconut wood and thatched with palms.
Facilities
Poovar Island Resort has a comprehensive holistic wellness philosophy that combines Ayurveda, Yoga and meditation. This `Green Leaf’ certified wellness centre offers comprehensive rejuvenating and curative treatments supervised by an experienced in-house doctor. There is a separate vegetarian restaurant catering to those undergoing Ayurveda treatments. An experienced Yoga guru conducts daily sessions. Poovar Island’s restaurant with an ethnic ambience serves authentic Kerala and north Indian cuisine as well as continental dishes prepared with freshly caught seafood, exotic spices and fresh garden vegetables. For a romantic dinner surrounded by the backwaters, try their floating seafood restaurant. The main swimming pool adjoining the children’s pool is located in the gardens with a sunken pool bar that serves fresh fruit juices. Other facilities include watersports, indoor games, cookery classes, and a gift boutique.
Excursions
Visits to the rural villages of the backwaters, sunset cruises, and boating trips along the backwaters are arranged by the resort. The backwaters of Kerala provides for a memorable experience. Meander past rural villages, fisherman tending to their Chinese fishing nets, Cormorants and Brahmini Kites diving down into the waters in search of their catch, rural women working at the coir mills, and the chatter of waving children as your boat passes by.
