Location
True to its name, Privacy is a secluded holiday retreat with just two bungalows situated at the edge of the vast Vembanad Lake. The property can be accessed by speedboat along the Vembanad or by road. Those travelling from Cochin will need to get to Puthenangadi and then take a longer 25-minute boat trip across the lake. Kumarakom is 65km from Cochin International Airport.
Introduction
Privacy is one of four unique and stylish boutique properties belonging to Malabar Escapes – a Green Globe certified small chain of boutique hotels in Kerala. Privacy has just two bungalows – the waterfront bungalow situated at the edge of the Vembanad; and the Heritage bungalow set amidst a one acre coconut grove and lush tropical gardens. There is also a luxurious house boat – the Discovery for those wishing to spend their days on the tranquil Vembanad. The signature style of Malabar Escapes which blends luxurious living with traditional hospitality and cultural heritage permeates through Privacy providing for a special holiday getaway.

Accommodation
Privacy’s bungalows are well laid out with interiors highlighted with vibrant coloured raw silks and a blend of contemporary and traditions south Indian art. The bedrooms are airconditioned and are furnished with double beds fitted with mosquito netting.

Waterfront Bungalow: This is a romantic one bedroom bungalow with its own living and dining area and situated on the shores of the lake. The verandah overlooking the lake is ideal for dining, relaxing with a book or just gazing out into the magnificent lake inhabited by waterbirds.

Heritage Bungalow: Set a bit further into the gardens, this heritage bungalow is an authentic `Therawad’ (old feudal home of Malabar) made of timber dating back to over a century which has been caringly transplanted with original rose or teakwood paneling, doors adorned with brass, ornate timber ceilings and intricate carved details - all still in tact. There are two bedrooms that share a bathroom with open air shower. The living room has a library filled with interesting titles including Arundati Roy’s `God of Small Things’ which provides a wonderful account of life along the backwaters of Kerala. Meals are served in the dining area or the verandah which overlooks the swimming pool, garden and the lake beyond.

The Discovery: The traditional hull of a rice barge has been fitted with contemporary architectural details creating a luxurious cruise boat consisting of an airconditoned suite with ensuite bathroom, dining area and sundeck with grandstand views of the lake and life as it passes by. Sumptuous South Indian and fusion cuisine is served on board. A crew of four – captain, technician, chef & house keeper is on board to look after your comfort and safety. The Discovery can be booked for a one night lake cruise or a three night’s backwater experience.
Facilities
The swimming pool is situated in between the two bungalows. Meals are served where ever you wish – at the edge of the pool, your own private verandah or dining area. Fresh fish is brought right to the river bank daily by fisherman and the chef will be happy to prepare it to your liking. Try the Malabar Escape’s famous fusion cuisine or traditional Kerala dishes.
Excursions
Explore the backwaters on Privacy’s own snake boat which is an old traditional race boat from a nearby ashram, brought back to life fitted with a noise free electric outboard motor. The Backwaters of Kerala consisting of lagoons, lakes, canals and a network of upto 41 rivers meet at specific estuaries leading to the Arabian Sea. Over 900 kms of this massive water body can be explored by boat. Fisherman tending to their Chinese fishing nets, Cormorants and Brahmini Kites diving down into the waters in search of their catch, village women working at their coir mills, and the chatter of waving children as your boat passes by – all sights and sounds providing a memorable insight into rural living. Privacy also has mountain bikes for those wishing to explore the surrounding rural villages.
