Location
Situated on a seven acre coconut grove overlooking the vast Vembanad Lake, Backwater Ripples is a mid-range property with a homely feel. Comfortable accommodation along the lines of old Kerala homesteads are scattered amidst a tranquil setting. Situated in Kumarakom, the property is situated just 15 minutes away from the railway station in Kottayam. The distance from the Cochin International airport is 70kms which will take about 1.5 hours. Trivandrum International Airport is 171 kms which is a three hour journey.
Introduction
Backwater Ripples is a welcoming holiday retreat that maintains the feel of traditional Kerala. Individual cottages recreated with original timber doors and wood paneling from old Kerala homesteads with gabled clay tiled roofs, are set amidst swaying palms. Relax by the waters of the Vembanad with a relaxing Ayurveda massage, feast on local cuisine made with fresh herbs and spices, or explore the backwaters on a traditional houseboat.

Accommodation
There are 34 heritage style cottages and suites with pool views, garden views or lake views. The bedrooms in the cottages are located on the upper floor with a private balcony. All are airconditioned and have ensuite open air bathrooms with h/w showers. The Deluxe cottages and Suites are more spacious and include a Jacuzzi in the open air bathrooms. Interiors are spacious and furnished with twin or double beds. Other in-room facilities include satellite TV, mini-bar, internet facility, IDD telephone, tea /coffee making facility, and room service. Backwater Ripples also offers accommodation on their own two-bedroomed houseboat with attached toilets, upper deck and loft, living & dining space, kitchen and a three man crew consisting of the captain, chef and assistant.
Facilities
The main restaurant – Cordon Bleu, serves authentic Kerala cuisine including traditional Syrian Christian dishes as well as North Indian and continental cuisine. The Lake side Barbeque – an open kitchen by the lake offers a special Grill Menu prepared with fresh seafood. Those who are on a sunset cruise on the houseboat can indulge in a candle lit five-course dinner whilst floating along on the serene backwaters. The Tap Room offers a range of local wines and beverages. The Ayurveda spa located at the edge of the lake and overlooking the swimming pool offers a range of relaxing massages and treatments supervised by an Ayurvedic doctor. Other facilities include a lakeside swimming pool, gym, watersports centre, internet café, and a separate large banquet / conference facility with seating for upto 1,000 guests.
Excursions
Kumarakom is a small village hamlet perched on the eastern banks of the Vembanad Lake – where the backwaters extend upto 900 sq.kms. Explore these waters on a traditional houseboat that will meander along past rural villages, Chinese fishing nets, old Hindu temples and churches. For the more active, have fun on the lake on a water scooter, jet skies or a speed boat that can be hired from the hotel’s own watersports centre.
