Location
Estuary Island, set on a four acre coconut grove, is located in a unique spot where a lake, river and the Arabian Sea comes together to form an estuary. Situated adjacent to the Poovar Island, the resort can only be accessed via a 15 minute boat ride along the charming backwaters. A five minute boat ride from the resort takes you to the beach which is safe for swimming during the season from August to March. Poovar is a short drive south of Kovalam and is about 32km south of Trivandrum airport.
Introduction
Situated on an idyllic location surrounded by the backwaters and the Arabian Sea, Estuary Island is a mid-ranged 71 roomed resort with spectacular views, extensive gardens strewn with coconut trees, up-to-date facilities and a holistic wellness centre offering Ayurveda and Yoga. Relax on the pier gazing out onto the tranquil backwaters, take in the sun by the poolside or relax and de-stress at the hands of an Ayurveda therapist. Children will enjoy the large, free form swimming pool located in the landscaped gardens.

The 71 rooms are divided into different categories: Estuary Premium are spacious suites with separate lounge area, ensuite bathroom with bath and h/w shower and room furnished with king size bed; Estuary View Rooms have views of the backwaters and the sea and has a private balcony; Estuary Garden Rooms face the landscaped gardens. All rooms are airconditioned and equipped with twin or double beds, IDD phone facilities, mini-bar, and satellite TV. There is also laundry and room service.
Facilities
There are three restaurants: Spices specializing in traditional Kerala cuisine and western dishes, Lotus - a floating restaurant for romantic candle lit dinners; and a bar on a wooden deck at the edge of the river that serves light snacks, cocktails and chilled beer. A large two-level, free form swimming pool with poolside recliners is ideal for soaking up the sun. Estuary Island’s Ayurveda centre offers a range of relaxing massages, beauty treatments, and curative treatments supervised by an in-house Ayurveda doctor. Treatments for weight loss and other medical problems require a minimum of 14 nights stay. Yoga is offered on a daily basis. Internet access is available at the reception.
Excursions
Take a five-minute boat ride to the sandbar at the edge of the Arabian Sea to watch the fisherman pulling in their catamarans with their daily catch. Explore the backwaters that meander past rural villages. Fisherman tending to their Chinese fishing nets, Cormorants and Brahmini Kites diving down into the waters in search of their catch, rural women working at the coir mills, and the chatter of waving children as your boat passes by – all sights and sounds of the backwaters not to be missed.
