Koder House is a six bedroom heritage hotel that is situated in the heart of historic Fort Cochin. This imposing three storey, red brick structure which dates back to 1808, overlooks the greenery of a children’s park. A few minutes walk across the park leads to the Chinese fishing nets and the Arabian Sea. Fort Cochin is located 42 kms from Cochin’s International Airport and the journey can take upto 90 minutes during traffic hours.
Introduction
Koder House is the original home of the Koder family, one of Kerala’s most influential Cochin Jewish families that owned many local businesses, promoted trade and helped to preserve the Jewish culture and community in Cochin. Generations of the Koder family lived in the house where for centuries local and foreign dignitaries, were hosted and `open days’ were held to encourage dialog between people of all walks of life. The family sold the house to its present owners, but still lives nearby on Jews Street and is actively involved in preserving the historic 16th century Jewish Synagogue in the Fort. The Koder House continues to be a landmark for visitors to Cochin and is listed under the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). The present owners of Koder House have created a boutique hotel retaining its heritage architecture and the homely ambience that it was once famous for. It’s Colonial architecture with arches, timber floors, antique staircases still remain. Rooms are spacious and are reminiscent of a bygone era.

Excursions
Step out to the hanging bridge that connects Koder House to the next building which once was the Koder family office. This ornate, centuries old wooden bridge is a unique architectural feature. Explore the Jewish Town with its narrow cobbled stone walkways where wayside shops overflow with antiques, silk shawls and Kurtas. The beautiful 16th century Synagogue with intricate chandeliers and porcelain tiled floors stands in a corner of Jewish Town. The Santa Cruz Basilica built by the Portuguese in the 17th century, the Dutch Palace and the St. Francis Church are all well worth a visit. Visit the Mattancherry Palace – once occupied by the local Verma Kings and now a museum that tells of their lifestyle. Verma Kings of Malabar were reputed to be highly tolerant and lived side by side with those of other faiths including the Jewish and Syrian Christians that arrived on this coast in the 15th century. Stroll down to the Vasco da Gama square – a narrow promenade that parallels the beach where huge Chinese fishing nets are carefully tended by fisherman. These large contraptions built out of teak wood and bamboo poles, almost in the shape of a preying-mantis date back to the 14th century and are a familiar sight along the backwaters of Kumarakom and Cochin.
