Price Guide: £££
Location
The resort is found 13kms south of the busy coastal city of Kozhikode (Calicut); 190kms north of Cochin, and formerly one of Asia’s most prosperous trading capitals. The Kadavu is set in the thick of the Malabar region in and amongst rich rainforest on the banks of the Chaliyar River.
Introduction
Kadavu is embedded amongst a sprawling ten-acre coconut palm grove. Its architecture is authentic Malabar; constructed in part with laterite and palm wood, gabled red-tiled roof. The enclosed front view of the hotel is a well-tendered landscape garden of lotus ponds, water features, and bamboo superstructures, giving the internal resort a regional stately home feel. The Resort is in conjunction with a well-established Ayurveda and Yoga Centre.

Accommodation
Kadavu’s top-end accommodation comes in the form of 17 independent cottages, set right on the Chaliyar waterfront, with large balconies to eat breakfast on and soak up the resort’s typically Keralan setting. As well as a king-size bedroom and en suite bathroom, the cottages contain a comfortable lounge and kitchenette. On the other hand, the more simple overnight night stay maybe suited to any one of the neatly furnished 97 deluxe rooms, with a panoramic view of the Malabar backwaters and coconut plantations. All rooms are centrally air-conditioned, and are designed in keeping with the architectural blend of Muslim, or Mappila, and Hindu styles. Each has a mini bar, television and round the clock room service. Bathrooms are en suite.
Facilities
Most notably, the resort contains an outdoor amphitheatre which stages folk arts and dances through the season. If you are lucky, you may see a demonstration of the ancient martial art from – Kalaripayattu. This form originated in Malabar, before being taken to China by the Buddhist monks to provide the foundation for many modern martial arts. The resort is proud of its dining. As well as a separate buffet restaurant, Kadavu runs a locally styled open thatched palm-roofed coffee shop-cum-restaurant, known as Olapurra. This 24-hour restaurant is situated next to the resort’s large and curvaceous swimming pool (with built-in Jacuzzi and attached child’s pool), and is complete with a fine view of Malabar and the Western Ghats. A third eating option is the boat-shaped ‘Uru’ restaurant, found on the top edge of the riverbank. The kitchen here offers authentic Malabar and Mughlai food, kebabs, and a good choice of North Indian cuisine.
Excursions
Small boating and fishing expeditions run on the Chaliyar River. You can choose your particular mode of transport. Either glide along on a traditional Keralan wooden rowing boat, with oars made of palm, or venture out further into the backwater on a modern motorboat. Pedal boats and even houseboats are also an option.
