Location
Surya Samudra Private Retreats, one of Red Dot's favourite hotels in South India, is located about 5 kms south of Kovalam, Kerala's most popular beach resort. Surya Samudra is hidden away from the crowded beaches, sitting on top of a serene headland within easy reach of Kovalam's quieter beaches. Kovalam is situated 18 kms from Trivandrum International Airport.
Introduction
Surya Samudra is a delightful boutique hotel with 21 heritage cottages, spread over 20 acres of lush tropical vegetation edged by the turquoise waters of the Arabian Sea. The heritage cottages also known as `Therawads’ (old feudal homes of Malabar) made of timber dating back to over the centuries, have been caringly transplanted and converted into elevated structures allowing for the cooling sea breeze to flow through. The blue-green infinity pool, hewn out of solid rock and decorated by the temple sculptures of Mamallapuram, is alluring, and there is an excellent beach for swimming and sunbathing. Surya Samudra Beach Hotel has come a long way from its initial simple octagonal stone house to its present tranquil setting.

The 21 heritage cottages brings back to life an ancient form of Kerala architecture with its original rose or teakwood paneling, doors adorned with brass, ornate timber ceilings and intricate carved details. The stylish interiors are furnished with double beds and highlighted with ethnic colours and object d’art. Each cottage has a private verandah, a garden with lush tropical vegetation that attracts plenty of birds and an ensuite bathroom with h/w shower and open-air bath gardens.
Facilities
The Niraamaya Ayurvedic Spa staffed by experienced Ayurvedic doctors and therapists, offers a range of natural therapies and massages for health, beauty and longevity. Rejuvenating massages to more intensive treatment for various medical conditions including rheumatism and arthritis are available. The hotel’s gardens are rich in rare herbs and medicinal shrubs which are used for the treatments at the spa. Certified Yoga masters from the famous Shivananda School of Kerala conduct personalised Yoga sessions for guests. Special emphasis is placed on the quality of the food at Surya Samudra with the majority of the vegetables grown organically in their own gardens. The in-house restaurant, Octopus, specialises in various seafood dishes ranging from lobster, tiger prawns, octopus, shark, crab and tuna. Continental, Indian, Tandoori and local Keralite cuisine is also served. Performances of various classical art forms of Kerala including Bharata Natyam, Kathakali and the ancient martial art form Kalaripayattu, is arranged on request.
Excursions
Experience the backwaters of Kerala located just 7 kms away where guests are taken on a cruise in a traditional boat. Fisherman tending to their Chinese fishing nets, Cormorants and Brahmini Kites diving down into the waters in search of their catch, rural women working at the coir mills, and the chatter of waving children as your boat passes by – all sights and sounds of the backwaters not to be missed. For those interested in traditional arts and heritage, visit the Napier Museum and the Sree Chithra Art Gallery located in the city of Trivandrum about 15 kms away.
