Jetwing Lighthouse Hotel is a stately five-star boutique hotel built tight to the coastline, barely a mile from the historic South coast capital of Galle. Jetwing Lighthouse is a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. The journey from Colombo’s international airport will take up to four-and-a-half hours.
Introduction
Jetwing Lighthouse Hotel is the inspired creation of the late Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka's iconic architect, who was responsible for linking the island’s ancient architecture with modern minimalism. Located on a rocky headland overlooking the Indian Ocean, this elegant hotel conveys an immediate sense of Galle’s history. The Portuguese landing at Galle is re-enacted in brass and bronze on the impressive main staircase and an ambitious batik of ancient coats of arms fills the ceiling of the restful main bar. The hotel design demonstrates Bawa’s skill at integrating architecture and landscape. Smart terraces sweep down to a small sandy bay, where a natural reef sometimes allows relatively safe swimming. Large swimming pools and sundecks have clear views of the ocean. Lighthouse Hotel’s newly opened eco retreat, Kurulu Bedde, is also situated a 15 minute boat ride from the hotel. Kurulu Bedda, designed by one of Bawa’s protégés, Channa Daswatte, has just two luxurious cottages immersed in tropical foliage, giving it a feel of a tree house. Set amidst paddy fields, mangroves, and lotus filled ponds, this is a nature lover’s dream. The peaceful surroundings, with sounds of bird call and crickets at night, makes Kurulu Bedde an ideal getaway for a romantic honeymoon.

Jetwing Lighthouse Hotel has 60 Deluxe rooms and three Suites with interiors a blend of Moroccan, Chinese and Dutch design. Interiors are luxurious and spacious, in understated boutique style. All have private balconies that hug the coastline and opens out over the garden or the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Polished teak floors, beds with hand-painted covers, and bright window shutters and cushions add colour to the traditional white walls. The ensuite bathroom has mirrors, a marble vanity area and a separate shower room. In-room facilities include individually controlled a/c, IDD phones, satellite TV, tea / coffee making facilities, personal safe and tastefully laid out bathrooms with bath and h/w showers. Suites have king-size beds, other rooms have twin beds.

Kurulu Bedde: Can accommodate up to four guests in two separate luxurious cottages with private plunge pools. Each cottage has an a/c double room with ensuite bathroom and an open-sided timber deck on the upper floor. The ground floor consists of private plunge pool. The bedroom is furnished with a double bed fitted with mosquito netting, and has satellite TV, telephone, and coffee / tea making facilities. The bathroom has h/w shower, twin wash basins and w/c as well as cotton bath robes, slippers and umbrella. Guests at Kurulu Bedde are served meals at the eco retreat’s own restaurant overlooking the paddy fields and lotus filled pond and can use all facilities at the Lighthouse Hotel.
Facilities
Jetwing Lighthouse hotel offers a choice of three restaurants plus 24-hour room service. The Cinnamon Room is an airy fine-dining restaurant with a high reputation and a penchant for seafood. Cardamom Café is the main restaurant and has a more informal atmosphere than the Cinnamon Room, as well as offering 24-hour room service. The Anchor Bar & Grill (lounge and poolside terrace) serves light western snacks, with children’s menu. There is also the Coat of Arms Bar, a lounge bar with pool, table. Other facilities include a business centre, a shopping arcade in the lower lobby with a selection of clothes, accessories, sculptures, and books. There is also a gem and jewellery shop and a homeopathy clinic. Lighthouse Hotel has two fresh-water swimming pools, children’s pool and sundeck. Sports facilities include a floodlit tennis court, squash court, table tennis, fully-equipped gymnasium, and indoor games. A tranquil Spa is located by the swimming pool and offers a range of treatments that draw inspiration from Sri Lanka’s ancient healing wisdom, Ayurveda, as well as from Aromatherapy and traditional home remedies found throughout South-East Asia. The massages, wraps, and body works offer everything from a pampering experience for couples to a soothing treatment for sun lovers, and even Spa Dining. The Adam & Eve Spa experience includes a floral bath under the stars with Spritzers & Canapés and a three-course dinner by the spa’s plunge pool. Your privacy is assured.
Excursions
Jetwing Lighthouse hotel has a small private beach but swimming is not always safe. However, there are a variety of superb beaches worth visiting in the local area, from the long surfing beaches of Hikkaduwa to the crescent-shaped Unawatuna Bay. Galle’s historic 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO protected World Heritage Site is just a short drive away. An afternoon can easily be spent here exploring a variety of artisan shops and restaurants, as well as just wandering the ramparts. Explore the surrounding areas of Kurulu Bedde accompanied by the hotel’s Naturalist. Numerous species of birds including the Brahminy Kite, white-bellied Sea Eagle, and Red-wattled Lapwing have been spotted in the surrounded area. Morning excursions are also possible to the Kotawa rain forest and Samakanda’s organic farming estate in Nakiyadeniya. Visit the nearby temple or take a catamaran ride to Polgasduwa’s monastery.
